I paid $350 for it and picked it up locally. I was looking for a nice, vintage commuter. Seemed like a really nice bike. What do you guys think?

I think there is a valuation section to this forum where you should have posted this.

I also think that's a pretty good price for that bike. I would pay that much since it's my size.

You got a bad deal. However, I will do you a favor and take it off your hands for $1000 (so I can still flip it for a profit.)

You'd give me $1000 for it??

No why? lol

looks like the crank has pedal adapters in it. I really liked the pedals with the bearings in the cranks, but that wasn't enough to get me to switch from campy to Shimano.

DuraAce AX (and the 600AX) never had pedal bearings "in the crank", the original pedals just had massive 1" diameter single inboard pedal bearings *in the pedals*. Though they were big, they were delicate and don't have a reputation for longevity (others will disagree). You don't have to worry since your cranks have the adapters that permit you to mount conventional pedals: whatever brand you like.
Aelle R frames are not seen very often, looks like a great deal, congrats.

Ya it looks like a good deal but I think it would look sicker if it were fixed and had some riser bars or something

At the risk of getting this thread kicked to curb....full Dura Ace 7400+ bikes start in the mid $400's. I'd say somewhere in that range.

I saw the same saddle, used, on ebay sell for $70. Seatpost around $65. Dura Ace stem around $45. I'm thinking I could make a nice profit if I parted it out.

It would be a shame to see it parted out and potentially turned into a fixie / ss. Ride and enjoy it for what it is.

That saddle and seatpost alone would bring $200 on Ebay. So considering you got a lugged Italian Columbus steel frame with all the other parts for $150 more I'd say it was a good deal.

What a great find. I hope you were kidding about converting it because this is a beautiful bike. The money you would get from parting it out wouldn't get you a bike this nice.

Yeah I was kidding about converting it. The purists probably think it's an abomination to have dura ace and campy components working together on an italian bike, but it rides so nice I really don't want to change anything.

thanks for the compliments.

A lot of really good attributes in the paint, lugwork, and components. Aelle is one of Columbus' lower end tubesets, so it's a but heavier and stiffer than SLX or TSX; but this is good for a commuter. I don't really see where it's a "spend $1000 and make a profit" frame, when some really high pedigree bikes are as low as they are now, but I'm not a pro flipper.

But, to get that bike for the price of a really good UO-8 or most UJMs in excellent condition? I think that's a great deal, you done good!

Thanks. It's actually Aelle R which is quite a bit lighter than normal Aelle. It's pretty much Columbus's version of Reynolds 531.

Yeah I don't think it's a $1000 make a profit bike either. I think if I parted it out I could probably clear $800-$900. Or I could probably get around $650-$700 if I sold it as a complete. That might be stretching it a bit too.

Once you troll it doesn't matter. I just ignore you what you type.

How does a person ignore and respond to someone at the same time?

Ok, I'm not too familiar with Aelle R, but I'll assume it's the same base metal as Aelle but drawn with thinner walls. The tube dimensions might be the same as some of the Reynolds if you say so, but the alloy Aelle tubes are made of is less strong than the 531 alloy, Aelle tensile strength is 720 N/mm^2, 531 is 802 N/mm^2, and Cyclex (Columbus, used for SP, SL, SLX, etc.) 1030 N/mm^2. Nivacrom is arouind 1280 N/mm^2.

That was my point, that the base metal is less strong than 531. If you then make the tube thinner, it becomes more flexy and supple, but perhaps less durable. I think I wouldn't want one as a commuter after all.

It's still pretty stiff and not super light at all. Aelle R is actually double butted.

I'm 5 11" 140 lbs. I highly doubt I'll be pushing this frame to it's limits anytime soon.

edit:just found out, standard Aelle weighs 2,345 grams, Aelle R is 2,257 so it's not much different at all.

Ok, I was assuming the Aelle was DB, and the Aelle R was thinner DB.

It sounds ok, to me, in that case.
