Introductions - Nishiki newbie from Seattle

hello! dont know much about bicycles..but about a year ago, my old roommate left this rusty road bike in the garage after he had moved out..it stayed there for a few months until i found it and decided to ride it, until it failed...then decided to do 'something' with it...mostly improvised as i went along

a two week long project

i dont know much about bicycles at all, but ive been lurking the web, visiting local shops, asking questions, being annoying, and all that...this is my attempt in putting some TLC into an old frame with a two week long project :

the rear brakes are missing because i havent had the time to buy the cable..


the bicycle is a 1982 nishiki century 10 speed

We have a couple of members who specialise in Nishiki--they should be able to help you out.

I work just a few miles north of SeaTac airport--you should stop by with the Nishiki one day :D .

Here is some info on Nishiki and Suntour for 1982. The century seems to be missing, so if you weigh the bike, you'll be able to place it among the other models. May be equal to the rally.
In 1982, the year before mountain bikes became significant, SunTour equipped about 60% of the medium-priced bicycles, compared to Shimano's 30%. SunTour had 13 different lines of derailleurs. From the top they went; Superbe Pro, Superbe, Cyclone Mk II, Cyclone, BL, ARx, Vx, AR, Seven, Volante, Honor, GT, and Mighty Click. Most lines had a racing and a touring model. Vx rear derailleurs came in four different capacities.

CONTINENTAL - 22.5 LBS

COMPETITION - 23 LBS

INTERNATIONAL - 24.5 LBS

LANDAU - 24.5 LBS

OLYMPIC - 26.5 LBS

RALLY - 30.5 LBS

According to Sutherland's, the AR "medium cage" can handle up to 28T freewheel, has a maximum total capacity (difference between smallest and largest freewheel cogs plus the difference between smallest and largest chain rings) of 30T, and can accommodate a 16T maximum chainring spread.

I had a Landau! Wonderful bike. Selling it was a huge mistake.

Ialso own a Nishiki, a Meridian XR2, for commuting and fun. Just had two rear spokes replaced recently. It's a fun bike to ride and I have put about 700 miles in it. It is original with Bontrager 700C32 triple puncture protection slicks. They're hard but no more flats from road debri!
