Bicycle Mechanics - Trek 1400 frame to Giant carbon?

I have an opportunity to change from my '94 Trek 1400 aluminum frame in excellent condition to a used Giant carbon frame in excellent condition, two forks (one with a carbon steerer) for very little cash. My question is, aside from a lighter build what are the advantages/disadvantages, in your collective opinions, of each.

I've never ridden the Giant, but had your same frame. Nothing wrong with the Trek, but compared to newer, even AL, technology that frame just feels a little dead. I noticed it most while climbing - it just didn't have a great response. Turned mine into a SS. 47x17 is the "magic" gear. (no chain tensioner needed).

I'd make the deal.

The 1400 was the last of Trek's bonded aluminum frames and have a good reputation. I have a '92 1420 (same frame but with a triple crank) that has been very good.

As you noted the Giant will build up a bit lighter. The Trek components should transfer straight across except the fork and headset which are 1" and threaded on the Trek and ?? on the Giant.

Thank you both for the response. I'm going forward with this. I just sold the Trek frame, a crank set and shifters to a friend for his son, and just called the LBS to finalize the deal. I feel really good making a good deal to a young rider, increases the "Bikema".

Well, that makes the swap even more appealing since the Trek is going to a good use also.

The ride on my Giant carbon frameset is far superior to my old aluminum frame. The bike feels like it wants to "lurch" ahead. Hope you like it.

How many cogs on the freewheel/cassette of the Trek? If it is 6 or 7 (126mm hub spacing) and if the Giant is newer and made for 8,9,10 (130mm spacing), then you'll need to modify/replace the rear hub.
