Classic & Vintage - Somebody stop me!!

Several days back I posted this Miyata 210 (http://detroit.craigslist.org/bik/1223550088.html) in the CL/Ebay thread at what seems to be a real bargain price.

I resisted temptation, but thought I'd see if it was still available. Called the guy yesterday. It is. He said his daughter bought it new, rode it a few miles, and it has been hung up ever since.

I am unemployed.

I do not need a touring bike.

I do not intend to tour.

My wife cried, "NO MORE BIKES" when I brought home the Super Le Tour.

I'm unemployed, for cryin' out loud.

And did I mention I don't need a touring bike?

Ride it then flip it at the end of the summer! Best of both worlds.

Man, that is a sweet deal!

I have two basic rules on bicycles:

1. The hobby has to pay for itself (so flip sales must equal or exceed bikes kept, parts spending, etc).

2. To keep a bike, I have to retire (sell) one in the fleet. No fair growing the fleet. And the sale of one I retire needs to cover the cost of the addition. So it needs to be an upgrade, at least in my opinion, to be kept. This has kept things in check.

I did violate rule #2 when I added a Lotus Classique to my keeper fleet, but since I picked it up for $16, I have not gotten any flack on that.

Buy it, get rid of the seat cover, properly set the bar position, take some good hi-res pics, re-list it on CL for $250, sell it for $200, take your wife to dinner with the $100 profit.

Or, buy it and re-sell it on ebay.

I feel your pain, but if you don't need it, have plenty of other bikes, and wouldn't ride it much then it would just be another bike taking up space....so you should pass.

On the other hand :D, if it's been available for a while and they say to make an offer, then you might be able to get it really cheap.

You have several good deals in Detroit right now. I see a Trek 500 for $75, a nice Nishiki mixte for $100, a Bridgeston MB3 for $100, Shogun mixte for $89.

Somehow I missed that Trek. But as for the others - not sure I could flip them profitably in the Detroit area or even on eBay. I tried my hand at flipping last year and not sure I'd make enough at it to be worthwhile.

Still deciding on that Miyata...I do have some parts laying around I could sell to partially offset the cost.

Okay...took the beater MTB to the nearby Thai place for lunch, then on to the pie shop (Grand Traverse Pie, for you Michiganders) for dessert. Nothing like a ride to clear the mind. And nothing like a food coma to quell ambition and acquisitiveness!

I'm passing on the bike, but I posted a note on a local bike club's BB about the deal. Hopefully that will keep it out of the hands of a hipster with a Dremel.

But if it's still there in a week...!
