I found this at a local second hand store for $60. It appears in good shape, frame is a bit small for me (guessing a 19) but has plenty of seat post to fit me. It comes with a shimano drivetrain (didn't recongnize the model though) and comes with a blackburn rear rack.

I'm wanting to turn it into a commuter, but wanted to make sure it was worthwhile before buying.

Marginal, I would pass. Depends on your area. Around here, I have picked up some really good name brand mountain bikes with higher end components for less than $100. Older MTBs are just not appreciated (yet).
