Southern California - Looking for a coach for a Collegiate team. Do you have anyone you could reccomend?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello

My name is Ryon and I'm a graduate student at UC San Diego.

Myself and a few students will be taking over the helm of the UCSD cycling team next year, and we are looking for a coach.

The team this year consisted of about 3 guys (all graduating seniors) who are cat2 and don’t usually do collegiate races, 7-10 guys who just started cycling, and one or two in between. We did not have a coach last year and we are interested in bringing in an experienced perspective.

We would like to find someone in the San Diego / Orange County area that might be interested in mentoring a relatively young cycling team. I see this as an opportunity to develop a strong team from the ground up, but I acknowledge that neither I nor any of our riders have the necessary credentials (i.e. age, race experience and training perspective).

Plus, collegiate cycling is a blast, and the conference should be pretty stacked for next year. We'll be doing heavy recruiting for next season and trying to organize more team workouts and events, etc. A team coach/mentor could go a long way, especially for those just getting into cycling.

If you've read this far, and perhaps know someone that might be interested, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it.

thanks!
Ryon

There was a BF member called adxm who was a SD racer, I think UCSD. The guy is freaky fast and super friendly. If he's still around there he might be able to help.

Thanks for your extraordinarily constructive criticism. Less time riding, more time scrutinizing internet grammar!

I only scrutinize internet linguistic atrocities when it's too dark to ride.

I thought some of the UCSD guys had coaches. Why not ask one of them?

UCSD has a very successful triathlon team (http://ucsdtriathlon.org). Perhaps you should contact the bike coach Mac Brown (http://www.macbrownracing.com/). Yes they are different styles of racing, but he might be have some contacts of people willing to work with your group.

I know quite a few triathletes on the UCSD team and I've heard nothing but good things about Mac Brown. I assumed that he'd have enough on his plate coaching triathletes to want to take up road coaching, but i never thought to contact him to see if he had any colleagues that might want to coach. Thanks!

You could try Arnie Baker's website and see if anything helpful comes up.

Do you have a list of alumni racers? My first year at UCSB, we had a coach who was a member of the team about 10-years earlier. He was the biggest influence on me and my development as a new racer. He put on bike-handling clinics in parking lots, did TT practice, pizza nights, even helped out people with personalized coaching.
