Mixtes seen in the last two days on sf bay area craigslist:
Mixte (unknown and beat) - $520
Gitane - $400
Mixte (unknown) - $400
Peugeot - $320
Peugeot (a beauty!) - $300 (sold)
Nishiki (beat) - $225
What!?! Earlier in the year I was seeing Japanese mixtes for ~$150.
Did Michelle Obama, or the equivalent of Brittany (I'm a little out of it as far as celebrities) suddenly start riding mixtes? I've never seen prices like these. Besides, I'm looking to spend $150, plus the obligatory new tires and whatever else. I'm certainly willing to do some work on it. I'm hoping to come up with a ridable, decent looking bike for $200.
Btw, this is for someone else. I've already got my mixte, a '75 Peugeot and I love it. I've got slightly more than $200 into it, but that includes some head tube and fork work by a (real) mechanic.

Except for the $520 one, that is entirely consistent with Portland (asking) prices for road bikes. Mixtes seem to command a bit more. You're going to have to watch a lot longer than 2 days and very frequently to pick one up for what you're hoping.

 I got one for the wife for 65. on Craigslist and thought I payed too much!! An '85 PH18 with a some rust on the back rim and a few rude, little scratches. Nothing that can't be touched up. All I had to do was put a new tube on the front and a little peddle work. I'm feeling a lot better about it now.

Don't know if you've ever fixed up old bikes, but usually the purchase price is just the starting point. You can sink some money, and a lot of time, into them in a hurry.
I bought an odd-brand mixte at a swap meet for $60 a couple of months ago and thought I had paid too much. I was buying it for someone who didn't anything about bikes and didn't have much money either. It was a decent bike too, everything worked, although the tires were a little cracked. Wish I had gotten two like that.

I would unload my 82 raleigh reliant mixte for $175 but shipping it down would be a bear.
And those prices look completely average for an inflated market such as you and I live in.
There's been a Peugot mixte that's been advertised on CL at least twice that I know of at what appears to be a decent price. IDK anything about them, though.
Long ways from Cali, though.

I have a sweet peugeot mixte frame (ladies) beautiful green color that has held up nicely over the years ( bike is 74-76model year) all original except new tires and seat. Simplex components, rigida wheels with normandy hubs, mavic racer brakes. This is the 2nd one i've owned and one of several i've ridden, these are as smooth if not smoother than some of the new bikes that are out there, (except for the old style shifting of course). call 417-234-7262 thanks. 624 S. Grant.( UPDATE I've changed the handle bars to a more rider friendly upright position) pic on left is before, pic on right is after.I will include the old handle bars and brake levers if wanted).

In your area, mixte's won't come cheap unless you are both lucky AND quick. For $150 or less, plan on getting one that needs a complete overhaul.
I just sold a low-level Centurion DLX mixte a month or so ago for $220. Of course, it was completely overhauled, cleaned and ready to ride. The woman that bought it came all the way from Santa Rosa to get it. They are popular, and clean ones go quickly.
That being said - the $520 one is a joke, and I've seen it listed before. It won't sell at that price. But $200-$300 for a CLEAN ready-to-ride one is the ballpark you're playing in......
You won't do much better than this one (not mine), and I'll bet you can get it for $250 - were I looking for a mixte I'd cough up the dough and be done with it. You can buy a wreck for $150 and spend time and $100 to overhaul it, or save a lot of trouble and buy a clean one:

I guess I did pretty good here in central Indiana... Bought this 85 Fuji Sagres Mixte for $30. It needed tires, tubes, cables and some TLC, but really didn't need much to put it into running condition. This is the original CL picture, but it doesn't look anything like this anymore.:)

You know, I think I got a good one at $110, but I had to redo almost everything. But it's clean. Here's a photo I just took. It's only been on the road for a week or so. It's (almost) my favorite bike. That front wheel and tire don't really match the bike (a bf trade), but that big ol' honking AllTerrainasausrus is a pretty cushy tire. It adds to the laid-back ride quality.
Dirtdrop, I'm in awe of yours. Really I am. And very envious of those cranks, and those fenders, and that saddle (which model?). And btw, I'm still going to install that fd you sent me! Check out the crank on mine - I did this after seeing one of your Puegeots. And I'm going to repost, in the mechanic's forum, the outcome of my headset battle.
jacksbike, man you said it! Bikes must have gone up, because I've seen much better prices - you know, come to think of it, those were winter prices I'm remembering.
alicestrong, looking good on that mixte! modern bikes, of any variety, just don't look as cool to me. I fixed up a similar one for my neighbor last year. Is yours a Centurion? I tried to talk her into similar bars as yours.
bigbossman, I hear what you're saying about price, the amount and cost of work, etc. My neighbor gave me a '75 Peugeot that was no bargain, even for free. Fixing it for a relative, I cursed that thing for weeks, and must have put 15-20 hours into it. And it is still not problem-free. To really fix it would have cost more than it was worth - but I have to say, at these prices above, I should reconsider that. The person I'm looking for is sensitive on price. A neighbor sent me the link of that same Peugeot you're suggesting earlier in the week (it's the one I marked 'sold' above), but evidently the guy deleted the ad and re-posted. The first ad, amazingly, had even nicer photos. My mixte originally had the same bars and grips (and cranks, etc - must be similar years).
Btw, I sent that cl guy who asking $520 a polite email suggesting he's way overpriced (it had a funky mix of parts too, with cheap rusted racks), and that he should at least post some better pix. He sent me back a polite email saying some guys who knew bikes priced it for him. I almost wrote back asking if he'd pay that much, but I figured I'd be pushing my luck.

Btw, who makes new mixtes? Someone posted the info before.
Koga/Miyata makes some really nice looking Trekking Mixtes that are available in Europe. I’m particularly found of the Randonneur M model with it’s lugged steal frame, and other desirable features, but it only seems to be available in Europe. It’s available in up to a 56cm frame, which if it is sized like most Mixtes I’ve came across should feel pretty big for it’s size.
Koga/Miyata U.S.A. has a Mixte Traveller M model they offer in a 57cm frame, but it’s a different TIG welded aluminum frame, and I don’t like the way the bike is set up nearly as well as the European one. Don’t get me wrong, it looks like a very nice bike, but just not as desirable as the European one. I rarely if ever say this, but when it comes to bicycles I sometimes wish I lived in Europe. :(

Found this on cl yesterday and was the first to look at it. The guy wouldn't bargain for it, so I paid the full $159. He said he got lots of calls. I think I got it because he did not list as a mixte (a new trick I learned - just search for "woman's bike" or something similar). It's almost the same as my '75 Peugeot (above), with a head tube decal instead of head badge. Paint's good and doesn't appear to have been ridden much, but it's got some surface rust on the metal, so I've got some clean up work ahead. I'll post more photos after some changes (upright bars, saddle, 700c wheels, cables, etc). These are the very lo-res cl photos.

That's why I picked up the green Peugeot at that price and in that condition. I knew it was resalable, even if the woman I was shopping for didn't want it. Peugeots have some kind of special appeal.
And given the prices I had seen, I could afford to put some time and money into fixing it up. I stripped the frame yesterday. No huge surprises yet: the headset needed repacking, and the rd pulleys were shot (so it does have some miles), and the wheel bearings need repacking, but I had decided to replace the wheelset with light 700c wheels anyway.

General question about old bikes and old wheels.
Best source for a light alloy 27" wheelset, 120mm or 126mm rear spacing?
Best source for a light alloy 700c wheelset, 120mm or 126mm rear spacing?
Nothing fancy, just something reasonable for old and inexpensive bikes. I've restored five Peugeots, all had missing and/or broken parts, worn-out steel wheels, etc. Four of them were 70s bikes, with 120 rear spacing.

You guys have posted some great finds.
I had been working on the green one all week and decided to casually check cl (dangerous!) yesterday and found another! I was 2nd in line and the lady before me canceled. It's essentially the same as the green one I bought last weekend, but with upright bars (which I prefer), and a much more interesting stem. This one was $100, and needs as much tlc as the green.
The green from last week:

Finished! It is my most complete restoration yet. I stripped the bike completely (except cranks), then rebuilt the wheels and headset, cleaning everything else and removing rust before reassembly. New cables, tires, etc. I'm getting a lot of practice at restoring these old things (naval jelly, aluminum jelly, brasso - all work great!).
I've now done four Peugeots in the last year. And with this one, I learned how these derailleurs worked (one of my rd's had a busted pulley, the other, a missing pin), and learned how to rebuild loose bearing hubs. This basket is something the new owner provided.

I wish I could fill a container with old 10-speeds from here in the Midwest and ship them to the west/east coasts. Here are some photos of bikes I found in one day in the local junkyard this summer. (I grabbed the American Arrow 10-speed in the forefront and I won't mention the other bikes I've claimed from the junk.) I fixed the Bottechia mixte and gave it to my daughter, the BSA 3-speed mixte and gave it to my wife, and someone else grabbed the Takara mixte. Must be $1000 worth of bikes in SF. I gave the junkyard owner $10.

Btw, I overhauled the bb of my white Peugeot mixte (paid the LBS $10 to get the cotters out), and even though the races were worn, everything worked fine with new bearings and grease. But I'll file the info away for future. My neighbor spent $100+ for his Phil Woods with french threads. I think that's all he could find at the time. Is this what you're talking about? http://www.velo-orange.com/grcrufrthbob.html
rdjohannes,
I'm totally envious. The market here is ridiculous. The green and the blue peugeots I bought were in equally bad shape, and both sellers had people lined up to buy them. $159 for the green, $100 for the blue. Love that Bottechia.
