Road Cycling - I need a cycling/dieting regiment.. help?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Are there any good books out there that can help me get in top shape fast? I'm willing to dedicate the time and effort necessary, I just need the knowledge.

I'll need a riding plan.. and a diet plan.. are there books that could help me? Websites? People to talk to?

Thanks.

The first step you need to take is to define your goals. With a starting point and a goal in place the rest is derivative. And there are far too many books/websites out there to start listing them off without knowing where you're starting and where you want to be in 6 months, 12 months etc...

I'd like to be competitive in ameture level racing within the shortest possible time period.

I don't want to come across as an @$$ but you're not going to get far with an attitude that demands quick results.

I just mean that I want to crack down and train very hard, I don't want to get magic results.

Sorry if I came off sour.

It's all good. Do you have any experience cycling at all? Other sports? Are you fit, out of shape, really out of shape?

Unless you've already been cycling recreationally for awhile based on what i've read here and elsewhere it doesn't sound like you'll be competitive on the amateur level till at least next year.

I've been cycling for about a year now, but not heavily. I've played football, soccer, ran, etc etc.

I'm in average shape right now, I've slacked off in my fitness though. At my best I was in very good shape.

I'll also add that I'm a youthful sixteen, so I can abuse myself and get away with it reasonably well.
