I am looking to buy a set of pedals with toe clips that clip into spd's.
I've seen really cheap plastic ones that I think come with the purchase of some brands of SPD's but I'm looking for good quality metal ones. I'm trying to get down to owning just one bike and think that my cyclocross bike would fit the bill but would like the flexibility of being able to change from SPD's to platforms quickly. I know that there are double sided spd/platform pedals out there now but I'm skeptical about the potential annoyance of having to flip pedals on the fly to find the right fitting.

changing pedals takes maybe a minute per pedal. I can't imagine that inserting those platforms would be that much quicker and then your platform side will always be top heavy rotating down. I personally switch between spd and toe clip several times a week on my commuter. I was told to throw those things out, one of the shop mechanics knew a customer that unclipped one while ridding but those were the freebie ones that come with the pedal. You might want to try the commuting section.

I'd get the platform/SPD pedals before I messed around with those clip in platforms. You'll be flipping pedals on the fly no matter which choice you make.

Dear Leo:

I am not the most coordinated person in the world, but flipping the pedal is second nature to me now, spinal column reflex. Besides, good quality SPD/platforms are balanced into neutral spin, so it will be facing up at takeoff exactly as you left it at stop. The only time I look at the pedals is at really hairy intersections, when I want straightforward dismounts, if need be.

FWIW: I have a cyclocross set up for fast commute and I ride in PD-M324. Love them.

OK, Ive abandoned my idea of SPD clip-on platform adapters.
Thanks all for your comments and suggestions...I've now got several leads of pedals to look into for possible buys. I also posted this on the commuter forum (as suggested by Justin) and told by someone there that there are pedals that have both platform and clipless 'clips' on both sides and so I will definitely look into those well.
