Mountain Biking - Brake Cable Question

On my Haro theres a sign that says the brake cable should never touch the stanchion but its touching it. It was like forced onto there at the dealer ship. I tried to pull it away but it just 'pulls itself' back onto the stanchion. Is that a bad thing? And how could I prop it so it doesn't touch the stanchion. Its a brake cable for hydralic disc brakes.

The worst thing that can happen is you get a rubbing mark on the fork! Oh no! See the link below for an example of brake cable rub.

Really? Well ifs thats it then I don't really care. I'm didn't buy my bike to win a beauty contest, I bought it to ride.

can you figure a way to re route the cable?

You mean the the brake hose right because hydraulic brakes don't use cables. You could go back to the LBS and ask them for a part called a Problem solver hose guide it screws in in place of your v-brake boss and will hold it away from the stancion

Actually, the cable rubbing shown in that picture is on the fork "Lowers" not the stanctions. The "Stanctions" are the gold tubes that the "Lowers" slide onto!

Scratches on lowers are no big deal. Scratches (or rub marks) on stanctions will cause stiction and damage to your seals.

So, zip tie the heck out of the "line" against the lowers to keep it away from your stanctions.

I think the original poster was talking about the 'lowers' and not the stanctions. Not sure though.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

The way I route my front brake line is from the caliper around the INSIDE of the lower to the bottom of the brake arch, zip tie #1.
Then along the front of the brake arch, zip tie #2.
Then this provides a nice loop all the way to the lever.

If done this way, I don't know how it would rub the stanction. But if it did, you could try sliding the lever off the bar and twisting it. This might rotate the line enough to make the natural curvature of the line orient away from the fork.

Does that make sense????

IOW, my hydraulic line has a natural curve when not connected to anything. By attaching one end and twisting the brake lever I can control the natural curvature of the line.
