Northeast - New York Bike Racks: Black vs. Silver

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is there a preference bicyclists have regarding the black, square-shaped rack and the silver, round-shaped one? Is one supposed to be more secure than the other, or is the difference simply superficial?

It's not so much the color, but the shape.

Yeah, I mention the color only to help clarify the distinction I'm trying to draw. The squared racks are, in my experience, always black (unless the paint's come off), and the round ones always are silver (i.e., unpainted). I think the former are "official" (i.e., city-placed), as I've seen a few with New-York-City stickers on them. I think I like the round version more, but, I'm not sure why...
What's a "David Byrne bike rack"?

Oh. OK. Thanks.
I think the black square ones are just a newer version of the round silver ones. Both are official NYC bike racks.
Last year DOT held a bike rack design contest so we'll probably be seeing more of these (http://nycityracks.wordpress.com/) around too.

Is this a crazy idea?
When they put in all the Muni meters,
why didn't they leave the old meter posts where they were and designed an addition to turn each into a bike rack?
Sounds sensible to me but maybe I'm missing something.
Maybe you should've submitted a design for that in the bike rack competition :p
