We need to start a nationwide C&V network where we all help each other "preserve" bikes found all over the country and get them to loving owners :D

I am in Dallas and I recently bought a bike from a guy in Ann Arbor. He was happy to ship. Email them - you might be surprised.

There's this touring bike in San Diego that I would really like to have and also, one in N. Virginia. I have brothers that lives in those state, but they won't pick up for me. ' said they don't wanna contribute to my addiction. :(

I know... I recently moved away from Portland but still have the CL PDX Bike page on my bookmark bar. I check it almost every day.

I'm sure if there's something you can't live without, someone out there would be willing to lend a hand and check the bike out/ship it for ya. I know I would. Although there are never any bikes on CL in New Mexico :(

On a machinest board I frequent, they have set up a transport network where something can be transported all the way across the US. I watched a 3000lb lathe transported from chicago to LA one time, then I took part in the transfer of one smaller lathe (10x20 logan about 900lbs) because I lived in michigan, but was working in dayton. (my job brought me all around the US at the time) I picked it up outside of dayton, brought it home where someone picked it up to take it to detroit, then it went on up to montreal. It was amazing to see how many people have 'territories' that actually overlap. Many times it was the same thing, people had to go somewhere for work, visit relatives, pick up or drop off something else and were 'empty' one way so it was no trouble to take it.

Would be no problem at all to leapfrog a 20lb bicycle across the state or country. Problem is with time, overlaps don't always happen right away. With the lathe it sat in dayton for a week, and then in my garage for three days.

I've also had 'strangers' (board members I know in the area) pick things up I've found on CL or Ebay, sometimes they're happy to hold it till I can pick it up, or drop it off at a personal friends house.

I check CL all over, but really pay attention to those cities I have friends and relatives living in.

I wouldn't do an interstate deal off C/L either (as a seller). At that point, I would just deal with ebay. I sell bikes slightly below market locally to avoid/eliminate hassles.

+1 on this. That is how I got my 1972 chrome Paramount. It was in Denver and I am in Philly. Seller was happy to ship and did a very nice job.

I sold a Trek on CL awhile back that someone wanted me to ship. I was skittish about it too. I ended up selling it local in the end. I look at CL where I have family. I've never done it, but I'm sure my Dad or Brothers would help me out.

For me I would only deal locally with CL. There are just too many scammers.

I stumble upon a Colnago master x lite frame on CL in Seattle (I am in SF) and I have a friend who live there. He picked it up and shipped to me.

I've bought two bikes from California/Arizona and had them shipped to me on the other side of the country. The trick that I have found is to contact their LBS and coordinate shipping for them. All I have had to do is pay the seller, they drop the bike of at their LBS, and I pay the LBS directly. Just make it really easy for the seller. Just keep in mind that shipping will be on the high end, but if you are getting something really cheap or if you really want it, that price may still be fair to you.

It is risky though.

Now that I live in the Chicago area, I could possibly help with getting bikes elsewhere. Had I still been in the Atlanta area, I would have happily helped you too. You are just a week too late.

Phoenix seems to have much more interesting bicycles than Dallas, I've discovered. And to some extent, Houston.

I also collect, restore, and race vintage European off road motorcycles. We have long had an underground railroad/network for transporting bikes. It helps that there are several national level races a year that people travel cross country for.

Seems like PayPal would be a good option too. Then the buyer would have recourse if the seller did not send the item, right?

I had a nice bike listed on CL once and no one here wanted to pay me what I was asking and I was going to consider offers but then a fellow in Manhatten emailed me and we worked out a deal and it was great. I of course waited until everything was in my account before I shipped it and I guess he had to have some trust in me but, once we talked on the phone, it was fine.

That experience inspired me to start up a thread a few weeks ago about having a BF'er in NC do me a similar favour but alas, once I did some research the bike would have been too big for me. Regardless, many folks offered to help me out, so it could be done again I am sure....maybe a sub-forum?

I don't mind helping out fellow C&Vers. I picked a bike up in Murrels Inlet, SC (relatively near Charleston, SC) where I was working. It sat in my motel room (along with 2 of my own bikes:roflmao2:) until I could get it home. Then boxed it up and off to PDX it went.

Its scamers that ruin it for anyone that realy wants to make an honest deal from a distsance.

hmm...you know what? This discussion has reminded me of a guy I met while working for BofA a few years ago. He was a kind...locator & aquirer of vintage automobiles for other private parties. People would tell him what he was looking for, and he'd find it for them. And then he'd make a "finder's fee" off of it.

It seems pretty easy to tell the scammers from the legit buyers though doesn't it? I shipped a bike to a guy in Michigan and had no worries. He paid via paypal, we talked on the phone, he didn't have any weird requests involving agents or the like, keeping the extra money, etc. When the scammers stop asking for unreasonable things and start using correct English, then we'll have a problem.

I've also bought tons of stuff from CL and had the seller ship it to me. I always offer my phone number, try to behave/speak like a normal person in my emails, & offer to pay via paypal to help alleviate any concerns. And if they don't want to ship, I don't give them a hard time, I just say "thanks, that's understandable" and move on. In my expierience, about half will end up shipping (but that's with parts...complete bikes or frames would probably be a different story).

PM has one set up in the antique forum, been a while since I've hung out at PM, but they did have a similar setup (with many of the same members) in general. I'm not really familiar with the operation of the PM board anymore, they've switched software a few times in the last year and I've traded of most of my machines.
