General Cycling Discussion - Cateye CD300DW

Does anyone have the Cateye CD300DW and
have you had any problem with it?
I ordered one at Performance which is now on back order.
They said because of a "manufacturing problem" the computer
will not be available until August. Makes me wonder if they are
having problems with the computer itself or is it that they can't
keep up with the demand.

I'm thinking maybe they can't keep up with demand. It's one sweeeet computer. Actually all 3 of em are. The one I want is the $250 one with the white backlit screen that has cadance and HRM built in.

I finally received my CD300DW after ordering it in early May from Performance. I have had it installed on the bike for a week, and so far I like it a lot. I was worried out it dropping out (which, I was warned about with wireless systems) and to date I have not experienced that at all. It is great to finally be able to track my trainer miles as well, which I like to do when I cannot get out. If I had any gripe at this point it would be the light. It does not illuminate all the great and it shuts down really quickly.

can it display speed, cadance, average speed at the same time?

Yes. The settings can be displayed in mph or km. So far I am impressed. I did notice tonight they have a new one coming out in October that has cadence and the HR monitor in one. That runs about $200. I'm a little leary of that one because with 5 windows it may be tough to read.

Finally got this last week. Installation was a snap. Setup was
pretty easy and it is working great so far.
The numbers are not overly large but I have prescription inserts
in my riding glasses anyway so reading the computer is not a problem. The sensor magnets
dont seem to be as fussy about being almost touching the transmitters
as some of my other computers are. My only concern is that the
computer and the wireless transmitter each require 2 batteries.

how well does the backlight work? and is it automatic or what?

the backlight is manual, kinda sucks.

I concur. And saying it kinda sucks is being generous :) For me that is my only complaint. Overall I like it.

now I forgot to ask is there a seperate easy to access button to turn it on?

Yes. When you are not using the bike the computer goes into "sleep" mode. When you begin riding, you can hit the start button and it engages the computer. It will not automatically come out of sleep mode.

To reset settings (distance, et al) you hit start and MODE 1 to set to 0.

I meant for the light how easy is it to get to the button? do the displays stay the same when the computer turns on? t

The light button is in the back of the unit. Easy? Not hard, but I would not say overly easy. I'm not sure why they decided to put it in the back. The other gripe that I have in the area of the light is the length of time it stays on. It seems very fast and then off. I have to look to see if that is a setting, but I'm not sure it is.

If you are asking about "same" being prior readings - yes.

its on the bottom, i have to reread the manual because its displaying average cadence instead of current.

Mode 1 will toggle the Cadence settings in window 2. I believe there are 4 displays.

There is supposedly a remote buttons option for the CD300DW. Anyone seen these or know where I can get one? More importantly, will these remote buttons work with Shimano 105 Flight Deck compatible shifters?

as to the backlight, have you found ANY computer with a good backlight (bright and long lasting)? i havent seen one, but ive only been using a Polar 720i, whose backlight is FAR, FAR worse, believe me....

as to WATER RESISTANCE -- now that i have this thing on im a bit leary about this aspect. what if i spray the bike down with a hose...is the transmitter fried???

My specialized turbo has an ok backlight.
The lamps on my light & motion have side windows so they really light up the computer well.
