Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bike Messenger Job

I called up a messenger company today and they told me to come in next Monday to start.

I have no idea how it'll go since I've never done it before, but I need a 2nd job and this seems like a decent way to save up for a new bike (I'm thinking of the Specialized Allez Elite or a Cannondale R1000).

I need a water-proof messenger bag now, anyone know a good brand I should get?

i personally wish i had a 4000 cu inch dank backpack. they custom make bags. i don't know the cost. i presently have a chrome kremlin. ask the company what they recomend and what their rider have. mike bike shop says the chrome metropolis is the most sought after one. if dank is actually good i would go with a chrome or dank.

oh, and somone here needs to make a poll about who owns what bag. i think chrome would win. baily is expensive even compared to chrome. i ain't making the thread because i don't know of all the bag companies.

i just picked up a messenger bag today, went to this place in boston called janox mfg. (www.janox.com) got a basic messenger bag, 2 inch wide strap, heavyduty/waterproof material, flap velcros and has clips, it has one inside pocket on the back (stashpocket?) and 3 on the front, one about the size for a notebook, one for a pen, and the end pocket is a waterbottle size. the best part about it is the price, you can't beat 25 bucks. janox seemed to be a buisness suite, filled with tons of material and sewing utensils, and 2 old ladies who spoke broken english. the bag is quality, and you can't beat the price. check them out or call them up, the number is on their webpage.

I had one of those janox bags when I first started. It was ok but it leaked like mad when it really rained out.

Well, our friend disappeared with his messenger bag almost four years ago since he started this post, but here is a report from a bike messenger that I thought some of you might like to read. (No doubt some of you have read it, and some of you even live it, but some of you new members - like me - might just be curious.)

matter of fact, don't worry about your bag being waterproof, just make sure it is big enough to hold what you need to...when it rains, you'll likely need to get a heavy duty garbage bag n e ways

Search the local stores first. I heard Macy's now has Timbuk2's for $35, and steepandcheap.com has had timbuk2's really frequently for $35. Baileys, Crumplers, Chromes, Reloads, whatever; they all cost about $150.

I got really lucky a few years ago (before messenger bags became popular) with a columbia sportswear bag. I know people laugh, but seriously, I still would choose it over a Timbuk2. Has the same strap system as a timbuk2, but it has a much better rear blinky holder (uses a piece of thinner rock climbing rope, easy for the blinky to clip to), and it lies diagonal on your back rather than horizontal. Waterproof too, of course. Plus, has 2 outside pockets, 2 waterbottle holders, a plethora of pen holders, a zippered mesh compartment, padded back, padded compartment inside for delicate items. It was $35. I've had friends ask me if they could have my bag if I ever decide to buy something like a Chrome or Bailey (the two I would probably pick). I doubt I'll ever get rid of this bag.
