View Full Version : Distracted wife + bike on roof of car + garage =
A big mess! Tonight my wife was bringing my daughter home from work and they both forgot about my daughter's bike on the roof. The Yakima's in bad shape, the fork on the bike is tweaked pretty bad there's a new dent in the car and the garage door isn't working right anymore. It took me a few minutes to calm down but there's not much sense in being angry. It could have been worse... we could have had all 4 bikes up there!
This ever happen to any one else?

It's more common than you might think. Next time you (or the wife) have bikes up there, put the garage door opener in the glovebox.

Has not happened to me, luckily... Sorry luckily it was just your daughters bike, and not your own (which I assume cuesta mas dinero).

I had a friend go in a covered garage at a local store with his bike on. Needless to say the car needed some work and the Yakima did not survuve but the bike was repairable. Just needed a new fork and bars.

Or in the Bike's wedge - no way you can't know you have a bike mounted then!

The garage door opener under the seat is my solution..Seems to work every time..Just don't forget as you close the door to put aside the remote..
All the garage door opener tricks (although great ideas) wouldn't have worked this time because my son was home first and he had already opened the door. I'm going to convert the bike to a threadless aheadset and put on a rigid fork. The garage door will survive but it looks funny from the outside. The worst thing is the Yakima. Boy that stuff is expensive to replace!
That's why I use a hitch bike rack.

Same here. Even with my hitch rack, I have a home made little sign that slips over the rear view mirror post that says, "bike rack!" Whenever i have the rack on back i slip this over the mirror to remind myself or whoever else that there is a rack back there.
Anything out of sight on a vehicle is bad. I had a couple employees run our box truck into (under) a walkway at the local city building. They tore open the truck and damaged some very expensive marble tiles on the building. It is easy to forget about something that you can''t see, especially something that is over your head.
