Touring - Topeak makes surprisingly good stuff

When I first started getting ready for my cross country tour, I had no idea who Topeak even was. However, quite by accident, the majority of my equipment ended up coming from. Everything I've bought from them I really like.

I didn't set out to buy a bunch of Topeak stuff, it just happened to be the best reviewed, relatively cheap stuff. Kinda crazy how much of their stuff I ended up with, and I can honestly say (with the glaring exception of the V12 Panoram Cyclocompute (http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-Panoram-Function-Cycle-Computer/dp/B000FIE3R8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1245527343&sr=8-4)r) I have been EXTREMELY pleased with everything I purchased from them. And the prices were all great!

I have the super tourist DX (much recommended over the non-DX), the DXP rack bag, joe blow floor pump, and a hand pump. No complaints here. Well, the rack bag really should come with a rain cover, but other than that.

I have their handlebar bag and it's mediocre at best. It's sometimes difficult to get off the mounting bracket and the material feels flimsy and I think it may be fraying on my relatively new bag.

Which one? They have three. I actually forgot, I have the middle handlebar bag as well. I find it pretty good, though since I got the rack bag I don't use it much. I agree with the difficulty of getting it off the bars, but do you know anything better?

The DXP bag is exceptional. I have two of them. Their rack and bag locking system is unrivaled in my opinion And both my DXP bags have velcro straps which means I can secure them to pretty much any rack.

I generally like their quality and innovation, but their panniers are a big fail. Cargo launch in 3...2...1

I have the Panorama V12, which I was thinking of installing on my commuter. What dont you like about it?

My take on Topeak is this:
They make some nice stuff, but the Topeak-Survival-Tool-Wedge is heavy and the tools don't stay put in the foam cutouts. As a result stuff falls out when you unzip it. It isn't water proof and the foam takes forever to dry out I assembled other tools in a small seat wedge that do everything it does, my set up is lighter and dries quickly (It isn't waterproof either, but that is less of a problem without the foam).

I don't like trunk bags especially for touring, but my Trans America companions had great luck with their handlebar bags (Compact Bike Handlebar Bag/Fanny Pack).

The rack looks OK, but I haven't used it so I can't really comment.

The Morph series pumps are excellent.

Topeak road morph... good pump. Personal experience says so.

After you have finished your trip might be a better time to sing the praises of this stuff. Before leaving is just guessing.

There's a couple different versions of the Panoram V12. The one I linked to is the one I got, it's apparently the sole computer in the world that doesn't turn on automatically when you start biking. You have to hit the little button every time you want it to start measuring. Very frustrating.

Happens all the time around here. How many times have we seen reviews with one use? Happens way to often.

Topeak makes a great bike bump.

Some of their other stuff is so-so.

Their new line of bicycles (Jango) seems ridiculous.

All I have to say is the Road Morph is the best portable pump there is. Small, easy to use, built in gauge, and can get road tires up to 120psi which most portable pumps can't.

I have a Top Peak rear rack coming, the Super Tourist DX, should be here, good to read some positive stuff about them. I agonised over spending the extra $80 to get the Tubus rear rack but just couldnt' see the value in it for my needs.

SteveJ,,I ordered a SuperTourist but it was back ordered and I didn't want to wait so I got a Tubus Cargo....the Topeak showed up eventually and I got it thinking I might still use it on another bike. The Topeak is now on the bike because it has the lower mounting rails like the Tubus LOCC. Having a rack with a top shelf for stuff or rack bag and lower rails for easy installation and removal of panniers makes all the sense in the world.

I would think it would be worth spending extra on a heavier, industrial strength rack (like Tubus) if you were doing an extended, heavily loaded tour far from civilisation. The sort of place where if the rack snaps, you could be weeks trying to get a replacement.

For the rest of us...probably not needed.

Agree with LeeG about "all the sense in the world". Also, having panniers sit an inch or two lower can't be a bad thing. surprising that there aren't racks that sit even lower. Not much reason for your panniers to sit any higher than ground level, really, for open road touring.

The tubus I got was built for a 26" wheeled bike and it's mounted on a 700c LHT. The fellow at TheTouringStore said people were getting the 26" version and it fits fine, and it did. The Topeak rack was about 1/2" higher than the Tubus Cargo and the lowered rails were about 1/2" lower than the Tubus.

I had the Road Morph pump (I think the G version, with the built-in gauge). Worked okay. But a while back, the screw came out that holds the little foot. And more recently, I was pumping a tire and the pump shaft broke on it. Grrrr. On the other hand, I replaced it with a mountain morph...

I love the Road Morph G pump. I must admit my hands got sore pumping just up to 90 psi, really sore. Also, unfortunately, I somehow lost the little rubber ring that seals around the valve, so now I'm trying to replace that.

I like the Road Morph, but I think the similar one by Lezyne is better construction. The Topeak multi-tool is also good.

I use the Mountain Morph pump. It is a little bigger than the Road Morph but it pumps a larger volume of air for my 2.00 tires and they only require 60 psi. The guage is remarkably accurate to the point where I have come to rely on it. I actually used it to pump up the tire of a motor bike in Laos about six weeks ago. The rider and his wife were very pleased as they rode the rest of the way into the village to get the slow leak repaired.

I also use the Alien II multi tool and oversize water bottle cage made by Topeak.

I like Topeak gear, but my LBS also thinks it's made of gold!!!!!
