Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

hello,

I found this and http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm
and got fascinated with the idea. However I am not sure if it is a good idea to ride this alone. I have done a couple bike trips including a transalp tour last year. However, Europe is not as remote as the rocky mountains. What do you think? It is reasonable?

I think you should ask this question on the touring forum here and at adventure cycling's forum and on www.crazyguyonabike.com, you'll have a better chance of finding folks who have done it. also search for great divide journals on crazyguy, i know there are some there, to get more of an idea of what it's like.

It's my understanding that it's a mostly non-technical trail, with frequent crossings into "civilization" for supplies. I know people do it solo (met one in MT), but obviously you would be adding the risk that a simple injury or broken bike could become serious because there won't be anyone around to help.

I would do it, and I may. I do a lot of solo backpacking and cycling in the rockies. When I am going remote, I carry a SPOT Messenger (http://www.findmespot.com/en/). It is an affordable way to have that extra bit of confidence. Most people who die in the backcountry sustain a fairly minor injury and then perish from lack of treatment. The SPOT gives you the ability to call for help and there is a great extraction insurance option to cover the costs.

That said, the best use it letting your loved ones know that you are ok. I press the "I'm OK" button every night when I get into camp and every morning when I set out. It sends email and text messages to your chosen people.
