I'm building a bike with an Alfine rear hub and a SRAM Rival compact crank. That crank is normally used with a 10-speed cassette, but I'm wondering if I can get away with using a wider (read, cheaper) 8-sp chain with my single rear sprocket set-up. Is the chain width dictated by the casette, or am I locked in by the compact crank as well?

Yes, chain width is more dependent on the rear cog. You should be fine running an 8s chain on that setup.
