I decided to start a new thread about this. A know several BF's use Braes Bayou and THP/GB park. What are the chances we can get a group together for a ride and meet face to face? If interested please indicate park preference and day/time.

Well, you know I'm in. Weekends are best for me...and of course, with this heat, the earlier the better.

If you're talking next weekend or later I would be in. It's been a rough week with lots of personal b.s. thrown in.

Hopefully, this week will be better. :D

Might even get a new (to me) bike that will need to be tested out.

By the way, not to steal the thread, but to give a heads up.
Last year I had my Half Century Half Century. Even though it's in August I'm starting to plan my Ride My Age Not My I.Q. Ride. While not a big fan of urban riding it will probably be a 51 mile rolling birthday party through some of Houston's urban bike routes pretty close to the route I rode last week. I'll start my own thread about beginning of August with more details.

i could, outside business hours is best, and closer to the city the better (think memorial park or braes bayou trail)

Tex_Arcana - I understand the rough personal times. Hopefully this week will be better.

A half century in August - let's keep that date open. I made a half century on Friday after work by accident. I left work in Sugar Land, took the long way home, then got on the Bayou trail. I then found the Columbia Rail to Trails and ended up downtown by the baseball stadium. If it is this hot in August plan on lots of water stops.

Any preference to THP/GB or Braes?

Believe it or not, August is much hotter :(

braes or memroial park would be my preference

The ride I'm planing would be Sat. Aug. 29th and I'm thinking early morning start. Last year I rode THP and GBP. This year I'm thinking about a more urban ride.

We should really make this about SW Houston get together though. Like I said before I'll make another seperate post about it later on and give more details.

How did you like Columbia Tap aggarcia ? My ride was pretty uneventful I only had to dodge a couple of women pushing shopping carts taking up the whole width and a homeless person sleeping it off in the inbound lane.

The Columbia TAP rails to Trails was interesting to say the least. The start is right past Herman park east of 288. My biggest problem wasall the stop signs. The path is perfect and ending that close to the baseball stadium was cool. You are riding through some rough parts of town. I would not ride this trail close to dark.

Did the rail line run through TSU?

I am kind of dissappointed that there has not be much repsonse to this thread.

I would love to ride THP/GB. I took the kids there a few weeks back. I would really like to ride those that trail.

Tex_Arcana - did you get that new bike?

Still waiting on an expected windfall.

Don't be too discouraged. The main thing is that we are all different types of cyclist with different schedules and other commitments as well. Getting a group of cyclists together just might be equal in effort as herding cats.

Just try setting a time and place to meet and a general direction to go in. When the guys that do meet up have fun and want to meet again then try it again. Maybe make it a once a month thing. Eventually you might get a decent crowd together especially when you ride fall and spring when the weather isn't really blazing hot anymore.

I agree. If we have a good time and post about it, the group will grow. Me and Tex_Arcana might need to keep our shorts preferences to ourselves though

Also, note how slow this board is, and then how slow it is specific to the Houston area. There are probably only 10 of us tops that post regularly, so if you get 5 to say they'll meet up, that's quite an achievement. To be honest, I was surprised when TWO people said they wanted to do the TdEo288! :D

Well the weather was quite nice at the last one (except for being hot). This time I ll make sure my cranks are on tightly.

I wouldn't mind meeting up with some people on trail to ride. I live in Cinco Ranch and my typical Road Bike route is to go thru GBP starting at the soccer fields and at least riding to Hwy 6 the farthest I've done is to Kirkwood from the house and back which is 34 miles. When I do the Mountain Bike I stick to the paths around Cinco Ranch and go the other direction past 99.

When riding along I-10 from the Sheriff's dept. (Barker Cypress) to Hwy 6 it would be nice to have a group as there is always a killer headwind right there. I go from riding at 15 - 17 down to like 12MPH. Coming back it makes for a nice tailwind. Somehow the wind changes back to a headwind on me. The joys of being a Clyde. :notamused:

I am kind of a lurker, but check regularly. If y'all pick a time to try and do one I will try to make it. I am down in sugar land but ride after work at both THP and memorial. I am willing to travel and can ride outside the standard workday hours.

I am off Thursday - Sunday, so can ride any morning. I know Sunday is out for AG, so how about Saturday at 6:15am at the JCC? That way the sun will definitely be up for the start.

I'm open to other suggestions.

Tex_Arcana
06-30-09, 08:15 PM
Sounds good to me. I will try to be there.

If I show up I will be the 50 year old clyde. I really have no clue what bike I will be on though.

Update: Just bought a Giant Cypress at a local pawn shop for $120 that needs a little work but it's ridable, Also going to see if Performance will replace a couple of broken spokes on the rear wheel on my SE Draft. I'll probably be riding one of those.

07-01-09, 05:32 PM
Wow, nice pick up Tex_Arcana.

Anyone else planning to ride? I will be there on a black Orbea wearing my argyle jersey since it's easy to spot.

Tex_Arcana
07-01-09, 07:00 PM
Yeah, I've been riding it today while my draft is down. In some ways it's a lot nicer then I thought. The Cypress has a cro-moly frame and rigid forks. I thought they were aluminum with suspended forks.

Likely it's an older model but I think it's worth upgrading and will make a very nice commuter/grocery getter/maybe even rondo bike. It's got all the braze ons for fenders and racks. Right now though it needs some serious work.

I should be there 6:15. I have been sick off and on this last week. I really do miss not riding at all this week. I did buy a new saddle I would like to try out.

Anyone else?

I'll be there at 6:15, just wondering how many I should wait for.

The Jewish Community Center. It's the big complex just west of Chimney Rock on South Braeswood. Make sense? Will you be there? Pick you up somewhere else along the route?

Tex_Arcana
07-03-09, 05:55 PM
I'll be there. Got the wheel off my Draft from Performance today and putting it all back together tonight. Meanwhile debating whether I should wear my olive and cream trunks with tomato red technical T or black cargo shorts with black and blue Titus Cycles jersey. :D

I'll try to make it on time. It will probably take about 30 minutes to ride up Fondren (conservative est.). I will be there though.

Like KWRides said, JCC is the Jewish Community Center. Your best landmark on the bayou though is the foot bridge that goes across the bayou there. That is the real meeting place. It's just easier for people familliar with the area to say JCC then say, "That foot bridge over the bayou just west of Chimney Rock".

07-03-09, 09:13 PM
Yes, I will be there in the am. I am getting ready tonight for the ride. I will have a red/white jersey with black shorts on my white/blue Trek.

FYI - There is a bench and bridge right across from the JCC. That's where we meet last time. I hope there is a bigger group. Another Tour Of East 288?

Another Tour Of East 288?

I'll be there for sure tomorrow morning. Personally, I'd love to go east to where the Braes Bayou path ends as I've never gone past Almeda Road.

I'll be the one wearing black cycling shorts. :D Probably will wear my blue and white Exxonmobil Cycling Team jersey.

I am still tentative. I have some kind of infection dragging me down, so I have good days and bad days. The Missus thinks it might be mono; swollen lymph glands and no energy. (She has a medical degree, but is not licensed to practice in the USA; works in forensic investigation.) If I show, I will probably be on a light blue Rivendell Canti-Rom.

Uhg, can't believe I'm up this early.

Or that I'm listening to the Detroit Metal City movie O.S.T. (pretend Japanese death metal but hey Gene Simmons was in the movie) to "get in the mood" while eating a Balance Gold bar and drinking Propel.

A late Friday night family dinner/get-together at IHOP, (yeah, I know; not my choice) doomed me to a mere two hours sleep at best. I set the alarm for 0430 HRS, and when it went off, there was just no way. I usually go to bed about 0630-ish, after working night shift, so my body's clock was all out of whack, even if not for the mystery bug that has been zapping my energy lately. Ironically, an evening ride on Saturday would have worked fine for me.

Glad y'all had a good ride. I will try to time my body's clock to match the next one.

It was a good ride with double the turn out from the first ride. Thanks Kevin for leading the ride. I agree, it was nice to put faces with names. I am also a night owl, but the 6:15 starts gets the ride done before the heat comes out. It was 81 degrees at 6 am. When will this heat end?
