Bravo.

The Specs are VERY untraditional - 73º head angle 48mm rake, 71.5º seat, 605mm top tube, 580mm seat tube ctr to top, 435mm stays. Still, it's a big bike ( the equivalent to a 62cm ) but my aim was to have a big bike that didn't look ungainly. Here's the parts Spec -

Frame : Thylacine Tephra
Forks/headset : True Temper AlphaQ X2 / Tange Technoglide
Bars/Stem : Deda 215 / Ritchey WCS
Post/Seat : Ritchey WCS / WTB Pure V
Wheels : DT RR 1.1 rims, DT spokes, Tune hubs 32h, Hutchinson Fusion tires 23c/25c
Components : 02' Dura Ace except brakes and front derail Ultegra

The paint refuses to be photgraphed properly - it's not as dark as the photo shows and has an Ice Gold pearl in the clearcoat that glitters in the sun. Pimpin'.

531, I went down to Port Melbourne and along the coast at lunchtime yesterday. I froze my ass off! Traditionally, I can't say I've ever been a Winter cyclist, as evident by me riding in shorts yesterday. *brrrrrrrrrr.*

55, the paint was done locally, so that's not gunna help you, unless you live in Melbourne. For kick ass paint in the US, Dave Sem is a good bet. If you want the same effect, the colour is House of Kolor 'Tangello' with 'Ice Gold Pearl' in the clear.

nice ride, wanna send one portland, or? ;) i've seen alot more people with wtb saddles at the local races...its nice to see more sensible seats being used then the current razors on high end bikes....nice job aussie guy...

Most Thylacines these days seem to end up in the US, so, Portland? Why the heck not. Want my paypal address? ;)
I just have a WTB ass...what can I say? I don't see the point in having a different saddle on every bike, so I'll probably end up putting the Pure V's on all my bikes, regardless. Road cred be damned!

Thanks... that's damn spanky. :) Did you design it?

Thylacine

Yeah, I design everything myself. It's my thing.

You can see the gold glitter in that head badge shot. How about a shot looking at the TT as if you were on the saddle. What kind of pipes is that frame made of?

Interesting geometry to say the least. Late 60's European ?
measure the front center as opposed to wheelbase?
How did you come up with this geometry?
I would imagine its a very plush ride.

As you say that is one pimpin ride.

Yo Thylacine - do us all a favor and take some shots with a decent light source - the gray/overcast/cloudy/shade you're using now aren't doing enough justice to that thing of beauty.

This frame is True Temper OX Platinum, but future Tephras will more likely be a mix of Columbus Foco / Dedacciai air hardening tubes. Supply is better and they're dimensionally more constant.

As for the geometry, it was a lot of research basically. I got fitted by an ex Olympic champ here in Melbourne ( John Kennedy ) who has fitted a LOT of people and is a cycling physiology specialist. He's a tall guy himself which I'm sure helped, but to be honest, the numbers he came up with and what I concluded myself were very close. *pats himself on the back*

IMHO the way custom geometry is going is based purely on the CG/Wheelbase equation. The numbers you get to based on this is pretty much just an outcome of these two factors. In effect, what we are doing is in a way pulling the BB forward rather than 'lengthening the stays' or 'slackening the seat angle' or anything arbitrary like that. It's complicated and 12:25am and I'm back from partying *laugh* so I'm probably making no sense, but basically the important parts - where your feet, arse and feet are - is actually not a lot different to a 'regular' bike. All the physical 'fit' is still there - it just fits me better phyiologically as a lanky guy.

Having said that, there are a lot of 5ft 9-10in guys riding around here on custom bikes with 71 degree seat angles and long stays, so there's a definite paradigm shift going around.

Mate, welcome to Winter in Australia.

wait, so you have a 71.5 degree seat angle w/ a setback post? what is the effective seattube angle after all of this? you must have really long femurs for that to fit you right...I suppose thats why its custom, right? :)

anyway, sweet ride. I like it.

taking into account that it's a big frame, how much does that puppy weigh?

The frame is 3.9lbs. Not sure how much the bike weighs, I haven't weighed it. Nothing except the wheels were chosen with weight in mind - I just wanted a nice, solid, fast bike that I could put my old DA stuff on and not break the bank with the other parts.

Of course it's fast. It's red. :D

how do you like the dt swiss wheels???

i have a set being built ... actually hopefully already built and ready for pickup

it is a very nice looking bike

Thylacine

It's actually very, very orange. Orange is much faster than red - it's a statistical fact. :) Just blame the digital camera - they freak out when you have to photograph anything pearl, and I couldn't colour correct the photos to save myself.

As for the wheels, I like 'em, but its early days yet. The rear hub is the lightest thing I've ever ridden at 210g, so we'll see how it goes. I'm reasonably confident they'll be fine - the rims are quality and my friend who runs the LBS builds a mean wheel.
