Bike's in today's paper, cheap, so I called. The women says it's a 10 speed, 27" frame (her husband is 6'3"), they replaced the racing saddle it came with and added a kickstand as it didn't have one. A quick search pulls up lots of MTB Rampars, no road bikes. What am I missing? And is anyone on here possibly interested in a 27" frame?

27 inch is a huge frame. I just wonder if she means a frame that takes 27 inch wheels? If not, it's too big for me !!!

No, she said it was a big frame for big riders. That's just one of the reasons it didn't sound like the MTB Rampars I found on the web.

I know that Raleigh Rampar was around and they were pushing the Rampar name back in the mid to late 70's. (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/catalogs/1977/index.html) AFAIK Raleigh never made any standard frames over 25.5" Schwinn most definitely did make a 27" frame and it is HUGE. I am 6'-2" and I couldn't ride it. I can and do ride 25.5" road frames.

I was looking for a model name when I pulled up Retro-Raleighs. That catalog shows that it applied to the whole line. Might I be lucky and find a real gem?

50/50 chance is just has 27 inch wheels. Most sellers have no idea of how to measure a frame.

Possibly, only way to know it to go look at it. I am going tomorrow to take a look at a mixte Raleigh, it has a mish mash of components on it, but don't know which model it is, probably a Raleigh Record. But might be worth the asking price.

Well, I went to look but passed. Model was a Rampar R-one.
It was a large frame, 25 1/2", with 27" wheels.
What was good: Good shape, pretty clean, good paint. Suntour 7GT derailleurs, Rampar branded LF Suzue q/r hubs.
Why I passed: steel rims, SR Silstar crank, cotterless, but with non-replaceable large ring, 2030 tubing.
For someone it would be a great buy for $45. But too large a frame to be a quick flip after some basic cleaning.

I had an R-One that I picked up at a thrift store for $9. Wahoonc saw it at the ABCE show in Minnesota a couple of years ago! It had the same components and wasn't a bad bike. It was a little too big for my wife and a little too small for me so I sold it. I think it's pretty much your standard low-end Japanese 10 speed. $45 would be a great price for it. I usually pick up things like that, clean them up, and find someone who isn't, but should be riding a bicycle. Usually it's friends or co-workers whose kids just started riding. Mine went to a guy in his 20's who had never learned to ride a bicycle as a kid.
