General Cycling Discussion - Does anyone else do this while cycling?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Sometimes I get on my bike and can't help but think of myself as something else, a car, a motorcycle etc... And then a car will blow by me going 45 and demolish the reality i've worked so hard to create. :o

Sometimes when I'm in a car, I pretend I'm in a bicycle. Narrow spaces bring me back to reality.

i do this...sometimes on rural streets i will wave to other bikers...that usually reminds me im driving...but sometimes the biker will wave to me first (when i have my bike on the roof rack) and that really messes me up:D

At that point, if you are or ever have been a serious walker,
then imagine if you were walking instead of cruising.

Once when I was taxiing an airplane I pretended I was in a car. Just about tore the right wing off when I went to park in front of the hangar. Good thing the instructor was in the plane with me to quickly bring me back to reality. That just about demolished more than my reality!

When i get on my bike I dream of being on my bike. When I walk to work, I dream I am on my bike. When I am sitting in my chair I dream of being on my bike.

Seriously though, I don't drive so I never dream of driving. The closest would be the odd time I think of MX. :)

im fascinated by the chain and gears. since i've started riding a bike because of the cost of gas i've become very sympathetic about all the times my poor old car strained going up hills.

When I was a little kid once I was pretending to be one of those floating motorcycle type devices that you saw whipping through the woods in one of those Star Wars movies. Comming around the corner I dropped the chain whent over the handlebars and ended up at the doctors for stiches :( But it was fun though. And don't tell any one but till this day ocassionally I'll enjoy the same fantasy :)

The Intensity of a Trip after use of psychedelic drugs can be divided into 5 levels:

Level 1:
This level produces a mild "stoning" effect, with some visual enhancement (i.e. brighter colours, etcetera). Some short term memory anomalies. Left/right brain communication changes causing music to sound "wider".

Level 2:
Bright colours and visuals (i.e. things start to move and breath), some 2 dimensional patterns become apparent upon shutting eyes. Confused or reminiscent thoughts. Change of short term memory leads to continual distractive thought patterns. Vast increase in creativity becomes apparent as the natural brain filter is bypassed.

Level 3:
Very obvious visuals, everything looking curved and/or warped patterns and kaleidoscopes seen on walls, faces etc. Some mild hallucinations such as rivers flowing in wood, grained or "mother of pearl" surfaces. Closed eye hallucinations become 3 dimensional. There is some confusion of the senses (i.e. seeing sounds as colours, etcetera). Time distortions and "moments of eternity".

Level 4:
Strong hallucinations, i.e. objects morphing into other objects. Destruction or multiple splitting of the ego. (Things start talking to you, or you find that you are feeling contradictory things simultaneously). Some loss of reality. Time becomes meaningless. Out of body experiences and e.s.p. type phenomena. Blending of the senses.

Level 5:
Total loss of visual connection with reality. The senses cease to function in the normal way. Total loss of ego. Merging with space, other objects, or the universe. The loss of reality becomes so severe that it defies explanation. The earlier levels are relatively easy to explain in terms of measureable changes in perception and thought patterns. This level is different in that the actual universe within which things are normally perceived, ceases to exist! Satori enlightenment (and other such labels).

Sometimes I take my hands off the handle bars, sit upright, and pump my arms while I'm biking.
It makes me feel like I'm running really really fast.

sometimes i pedal really hard and stick my arms out in front of me and pretend i'm superman. it's pretty convincing when you lean forward enough.

usually those times are when i'm drunk.

I sometimes I pretend I am one of those light cycles from Tron. It is even more convincing when negotiating fast turns.

Lately I pretend that I am in the new Lance commercial and imagine the music playing in the background as I slip into a cadence similar to the one he has in the commercial.

Your not crazy, bicycyling is often a quiet lonely activity and we have to do something during the long hours of riding.

I don't have the chutzpah to pretend I'm Lance, but I do sometimes picture myself in a USPS jersey, pumping up the Alps. Of course, I eventually remember that I'm a rank amateur and that this is Missouri, not France.

The Burgundy region of Missouri right? :D

I sometimes try to imagine the bike does not exist. If I can manage that, the next step is to disconnect myself from my legs and just focus on motion and intention. I can do this more rarely.

The effect is much like one of those "flying dreams", except you are awake and alert.

This happened to me the first time by accident near the end of a long ride, when I was very tired. The experience was so cool, I tried to cultivate it when I wasn't exhausted.

Missouri is actually a fairly significant wine producer. And I'm not referring to ripple-quality wine. The state is like anywhere else-some places are too rural, resulting in congential hickism. Some are too urban, and end up becoming inner-city hells. I'm just outside Kansas City, so I avoid the worst aspects of either option.
There are some gorgeous rides around here, by the way.
