The reason for his fall is still under investigation but on the plus, at least he wasn't hit by a car...

Nothing in the story about whether or not he was wearing headphones.

whats wrong with clipless pedals? After a day you can get out of them just as easily as if using platforms...Toe clips on the other hand are dangerous.

They require special shoes that are hard to walk in.
I prefer toe clips, with the straps modified to run diagonally (like powergrips, but more robust).

I have a slight elevation phobia.. And a respect for cliffs. I' am always the last one down..
Once had to have shoulder surgery after hitting a small rock in the road.. It can happen on a down hill. Once on Big Sur I had a flat on a descent.. I thought I was going over about a 1000 foot cliff. The flat was on the front on a fast downhill. The steering got wobbly.. But, my fall would not have been 250 feet. More like a thousand feet. And the roads about Big Sur have few barriers. Not that it's not easy to bunny hop over an average barrier.

Wouldn't have made much difference if you were wearing a helmet, eh? Or not, but that is almost always the case but that is a hot subject for a different thread.

I always wear a helmet. If nothing else. Maybe, it'd make me look more intact in my coffin.?

Wonder if there are any worthy components on the bike that can be salvaged?

A few years ago, a 23 year old motorcyclist drag racing on my residential street hit the side of a pickup truck making a U-turn. The helmet did protect his pretty face. Unfortunately the inside of his body (and head) was probably made into instant mush and he more than likely was dead before his body landed on the curb in front of my house.

He didn't even bleed much since his heart probably stopped pumping before he hit the street.

Terrible.. I've known truck drivers who have witnessed terrible accidents. They tell me, you'd never want to be a highway patrolman should you have a weak stomach.

What has ease of walking got to do with flying off a cliff?

Dammed if I know, someone asked about the disadvantages of clipless pedals.
But what do clipless pedals have to do with flying?

It's the granny gear that killed him.
If he couldn't have gotten up the hill, he couldn't have fallen off the cliff on the other side.

This is why I always ride with a parachute.
