Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Ross Signiture Series 7000 series???

I just bought a Ross Signiture Series Bryce Canyon 7000 series Mountain bike and was wondering if anyone could give me any info on this bike or tell me were I could get some. I need to get some parts for it and I don't have a clue what i need. It's serial # is u96032490 if that is any help to anyone. Thank you very much.

Best bet is to take it to a local bike shop. Pretty much all the various brands of bikes use common components that come in relatively standard sizes. Just about none of the bike manufacturers made many of their parts, beyond the frame and fork (some didn't even make that). So if you need any parts, then a bike shop will be able to help you. A Ross bike is just a Ross frame, onto which various standard components are bolted onto it.

If you want to learn about bike maintenance, then the Park Tool site is a good place to start.

Almost all vintage mountain bikes have very little value. Many are really nice bikes, just not appreciated by the marketplace right now.

Ross made a lot of really low end department store bikes. The signature series was the exception. They tend to be pretty nice bikes.

This bike doesn't have a standard rear dérailleur hanger like a nice bike would have. It's like a cheap bike that doesn't have a hanger but there are 3 small screw holes around the dropout. I've never seen this before and I'm curious if it uses a special hanger. I know how to get around this but I would like to make it orginal if possible. If anyone knows any useful information or were I could find it that would be helpful.

I did find a hanger. It's at www.derailleurhanger.com #283 It's not a perfect match. You need to do a little grinding on it, The 3 screw holes do match up. That is the closest match.

I ordered one tonight. I will try to build up this frame to see what its like. I think this bike was from 1979 so it was built after Ross went bankrupt and their name was bought by another company, so I don't think of it as one of their nice Signature series bikes with the steel frames. But it does seem to be a light frame and I got the frame free from a metal junk pile so the derailleur will be the only real money I invest in the build ($26 for a little piece of metal!! sheeeesh), since I have a lot of spare components laying around, including wheels.

Did you mean 1997?, Ross did not go under until some time in the late 80s or early 90s. I don't think Ross was manufacturing MTBs in 1979, but they did shortly after that date. It's not too well known but in the early mountain bike racing days, Ross was a real competitor, frequently winning events. Also, Ross Signature road bikes from the mid- 80s are sought after, good quality bikes.

Yes, sorry, meant 1997. I WISH it was one of those 80's road bikes with the Redcay or Kellog frames!
It does seem like a light frame though. The paint / clear coat on it is trashed though. Its peeling off everywhere.
I will look into safe ways of removing all the paint from the frame and just having bare aluminum.

Glad to hear you got your derailuer hanger. After I bought the bike I found out that Ross was bought out by Rand. I found a phone number to Rand in Farmington, NY. I got a hold of a man named Paul. He had worked for Ross/Rand for 30 some years. He was very helpful and rememembered the bike. He said it was a well-built bike. And the bike was made in the early to mid nineties. He told me at the time that they had the hangers in the warehouse. But they didn't know where they were. I talked to him on and off all summer, they finally found one, and they said they sent it to me. After a couple weeks lapse I didn't receive it so I called . He told me after the last time I talked to him that Rand had gone bankrupt and he was losing his job. He told me he would still try to find the hanger but I never got it. The last time I called there was no anwser. That's when I had to buy it from deraileurhanger.com. As for my bike I have got all the parts but, I haven't got it together yet. Hopefully I will get it together this summer.

Ross Bryce Canyon TSI 7005 Series Frame-18Inch. -I bought the frame (Brand New) off of E-bay for $20.00 Believe it or not. I then decided to build this bike from scratch. I built it up with Shimano LX and XT components with LX V Brakes and Rapid fire shifting. Wiemann ZAC 19 Wheels with LX Hubs. The bike is 24 Speed, with XT rear and LX front derailleurs. Titanium Handle Bar, with AZONIC Ball Burnish Stem. DIA COMP/GT AHeadset. Rock Shox Pilot Air and Oil Shocks. The Frame was built in Framingdale NY by the Ross Company. Now here is the question, what year was the frame made? Honestly I don’t have a clue. I am guessing it was built the last year Ross was in business. I know I built a hell of a bike out of the deal, and it rides awesome.

I am going to call them today and see what the story is.
Sad to see a well known bike company go down the tubes like it did. They should really go back to the drawing board and start making some decent bikes again.
