Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have just gotten into mouintain biking a few weeks ago. To my surprise, I am having no problems adjusting to it from road cycling. One of my neighbors is mountain biking with me, but is having a lot of problems. Is that because I do a lot of road cycling and he does not?

Your inital level of activity will play a role in how well you do off road. If he doesn't ride much period he won't do as well on trails as someone who rides more often

Nah it's the bikes.. I bet you have either a 20 inch travel freeride bike or a 2lb xc race machine.. it's never the rider it's always the bike ;)
Seriously yeah, being used to pedaling and cornering on a bike no matter what it is will always help. You are used to the balance of the bike..

As a note. I know a couple of top level xc racers and they easily spend 80% of their time on the road. That should tell you how big a role it plays. Skills and technique come with riding, if you aren't in condition you won't be riding much ;)

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree. Its 90% Skill and Technique, but only 10% Bike.

Notice how it puts the balance of the rider as most important aka skill...... sheesh.. some people on forums.. ;) <---- notice smiley... I'm making a funny for those lacking-sarcasim finding skills. :D
