Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hey all, I am getting back into mtb after a hiatus of a few years and am looking to purchase a bike for use on trails a few weekends a month, but also to ride to and from the university from my apt. I am looking at either the Cannondale F5 or the Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc (or possibly the Cannondale F4, but it is a bit more expensive). Anybody own one or the other and can make a recommendation? Thanks!

Wow...9 minutes and nobody's posted up a "Specialized sucks" reply! This forum is going to hell.

Cannondale and Specialized both make good bikes with good warranties. Find a shop that will let you ride them both and buy that one that suits you best.

My son (and I) loves his Enduro S-Works too. But this is a "good of the order" issue that transcends all of that.

OK I'll go with that. :)

Only difference, imho, between the F5 and the F4 is the brakes. The F4 frame is the Caffeine (American made) where the Co2 frame is the same frame, but made in a foreign land.

F4 has Juicy 3s, the F5 has BB5s. Otherwise, they're both running middle of the road SRAMeinstein drivetrains and the low-end Headshock.

Personally, if you've never dealt with Juicy 3s - go with the F5 to avoid the hassle of mineral oil brake systems. The 3s run a bit tight too, and aren't that forgiving where the BB5s are mechanical-disc.

I know jack **** about Specialized. We don't sell them here at the LBS.
