Touring - Fishing while touring

I am planning a tour along the California Coast. Probably sometime next spring. I want to do some fishing along the way. I will be taking both front and rear panniers. I was wondering, how do I strap the pole to my bicycle with my panniers?

Just a quick thought: Get a pole that can be broken down into 2 pieces. Then just strap it to the sides your top tube with velcro straps ot something?

Get DIY and sew a pocket onto the back of one of your panniers to shove the pole into vertically.

Uhmm...that's all I can think of at the moment.

Look for a 3 or 4 pc pack rod

You could also pack a multi piece in the seat tube. (as well as spokes)

I always Velcro the two piece pole to my top or down tube and throw the reel in one of the bags, or on the rack.

Make a rod holder out of pvc about 12 inches long. Drill small holes in it and zip-tie it to your rear rack. Use a small bungee to hold rod down. You could even put a flag at the top of your rod for visibility. BTW, 2pc rods suck. They're hollow and the tips break very easily.

22 years and counting and have never broke even one.

Bring line and hooks and tie them to a stick when you get there.

(I was also thinking about a vertical mount plus flag on top, but someone else thought of it first.)

Thank you all, for all the excellent advice. I didn't know the "pocket fisherman" was still around. I do like this device, but not sure how it will handle a ocean current.

I will check with some of my local bait and tackle shops for a pole, that breaks down into four pieces.

Most of the shore fishing you'll see on the CA coast is surf casting, using great big long rods. There are two other (lighter and more portable options). I've had great fun using light tackle. A typical spinning rod used for trout, loaded with 4-6 lb test is ideal. Put a sliding egg sinker above a swivel, and add a snelled hook in the 6 range. Lace on a motor oil-colored screwtail worm and wade in about waist deep.

Look for channels where the water recedes and cast there. Surf perch go for this rig, and they put up a good fight. Be sure to rinse the reel and guides in fresh water every time you use it to keep corrosion down.

Another approach that I've got less experience with, but that some employ especially in SoCal where the water's warmer is to carry a handline. Rig the terminal tackle of your choice, then swim parallel to shore with it. A mask and fins are very helpful here.

Er... the vast majority of fishing rods are hollow. 1pc., 2pc. and more.
