Converted this 82 schwinn traveler for a daily commuter. Put on a 16t freewheel, changed out the bars, brake levers, and saddle. I ran into a bit of an issue removing the crank, so the large chainring is still on. Probably will add toeclips. I traded for the bike and all but the freewheel and bar tape came off of other projects, so my total out of pocket is something like $30. If I enjoy single speed as much as I think, I may spring for a set of wheels, the current one's are alloy but [U]heavy.[U] Any other changes I should consider?

Double check (and replace if necessary) your chainring bolts.

It looks like you've got the same gigantic bash guard/spider as my '74 Sports Tourer. The inner is 118 bcd, by the way, so if you do this...

...You're pretty much SOL on finding a replacement.


So like I said, double check that hardware, and grease/reseat the bolts if you haven't already.

I will check the bolts, thanks. That looks pretty nasty! I still had the rack and some panniers from my late 70's peugeot, so they are now being put to use.

How long do you find yourself looking to shift going up a hill? I figure this will make me a much stronger climber!
