Manufacturer, Retailer, Survey and Consumer Feedback - Quick (5 minute) accident questionnnaire - apologies if posted in wrong forum

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello all,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ralph Marszalek and I am a researcher working in the School of Optometry within the Vision and Driving Unit, led by Professor Joanne Wood at the Queensland University of Technology located in Brisbane, Australia. We are currently working on a project that aims to better understand:

The circumstances associated with accidents involving vehicles and cyclists

We are particularly interested in understanding the factors leading to accidents involving cyclists, with the subsequent aim of improving the safety of cyclists on the road. We are now in the preliminary stages of distributing a survey to various cycling groups and websites. Our aim is to gain an insight into the factors surrounding any accidents that cyclists may have been involved in when on the road. From such insight we hope to be able to inform current policies regarding cyclist safety and consideration on the road.

I have been asked to get in contact with a number of well respected cycling groups and organisations to ascertain whether they would be willing to complete some surveys and help us in our work to increase cyclist safety and reduce cyclist injuries and fatalities.
We are looking for respondents from all over the world, not just Australia.

The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete and is available on-line via a Google survey form which can be found at:

Thank you for your time, we look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Ralph Marszalek | Senior Research Assistant | Vision and Driving Unit | Centre for Eye Research | Queensland University of Technology | Victoria Park Road, Kelvin Grove, QLD 4059, Australia

"Well respected cycling groups and organizations"? Us?

I see a problem in the wording ' accident that occured to you'. I'm not sure if that kind of wording will affect how people describe the accidents they were involved in or not.

Another confusing aspect of the survey: near the beginning, it asks for a description of "the most recent accident that occurred to you while cycling." A few questions later, it asks "What type of motorvehicle was involved in the accident?" with no option for "none".

Was the earlier question meant to refer only to crashes involving motor vehicles? If so, it needs to say so.

It did have an option for 'other', I used that and filled in 'asphalt'.
I wasn't sure if the driver of the asphalt noticed me before collision or not, but thankfully he had an 'Uncertain' option...

I have done 4500 mile and no accidents riding in heavy traffic. I would think why accidents do not happen would be useful as well. I have had many near accidents and they have all been driver error or driver inattention.

In case anyone else is like me and doubts people's credentials by default, here's a link to his profile at the university: http://www.hlth.qut.edu.au/opt/about/staff/staffprofile.jsp?id=236.

Looks legit to me. :)

I just reported the last time I was clipped by a car in fast-moving traffic.

All the other contact at low speed and my single-vehicle wipeouts on the mountain bike are pretty forgettable.

Hello all...Hello, and welcome to the Forums.

You will of course provide free dissemination of your research results to all these groups and organizations you approach? That tends to be the problem with these questionnaires - people never seen before on these Forums post them, collect the answers and disappear for good. It would be nice to have an exception to that rule.

Just took the survey, and judging by the questions, it seems as though it's going to be a "recommended equipment for cyclists" type of study. For some reason I see mandatory helmets, 500 watt blinkies, and dayglo reflective jerseys for you Australian riders. Possibly even pace cars with "BICYCLE' banners running before and after the bicycle as they did with flagmen and horseless carriages of old. :D

honestly, the biggest problems I have had stem from riding near the curb. Now I know to take the lane when possible, but pedestrians tend to look one way, and step off the curb as they look the other. Not particularly useful.
