Road Cycling - What is the hand signal for gator in the road?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. On this morning's ride there was a medium sized (5 - 6 ft) gator laying in the bike lane. What would be the appropriate hand signal for the pace line?

not sure - but i would think you'd want to stop the pace line entirely so everyone can go around it safely.
i think the correct way to tell other bikers is that you sacrafice yourself to the gator.

Did the gator get mad when you forgot to call out "on your left"?
can't believe you actually saw a gator on the street! :D :D :D
we have crocs here.. but I have never seen one on the street, loose.. in swamps maybe..
I guess I would be terrified..
I wouldn't be able to make handsignals.. I would just freeze... :)
I just hope it does not end up a roadkill... heck.. who would run over a 6foot gator, anyway..

I don't know of a hand signal, but yelling, " Gator up! STOP!" is what I did the only time we had one on our Tuesday ride. She took a look our way, then slogged off into the water hazard at the 8th green at Port Royal Golf Club.
I second the "hand puppet" chomping motion and you might also want to call out "GATOR UP!" :)

Not looking to take away from your gator issues, but yesterday my wife and I were on our Saturday ride on the bike path in Sacramento. There was a rattlesnake to the left just off the trail so I turned and stopped to be sure she stayed clear of the snake. She stayed to the right so I said nothing till later. As she got past it she said we should get out of that area. She was not avoiding the snake as I thought, but the Coyote that was on the right up the hill from the trail. I guess I need two signals to cover both. :p :p

How about a high-pitched girlie scream?

Alligators are about as common as raccons in these parts. Just as long as you don't hear one growl or hiss, you're OK.

just point and yell......
"Crikey! Look at the size of that bugger!"
We have quite a few gators here in Central FL. At certain times of the year, they wander around. Reptiles do that to find either new homes or mates. I have seen a few small road killed gators but I have never seen one on a road or bike path. It is worth stopping the pace line just to gawk at the critter and probably a good idea too. You don't want to hit a gator that size and I have no idea how a gator behaves when startled by a bunch of cyclists.

Usually, they lick their chops and think "Mmmmm....cyclist. Yummayyy"

I think they actually say something like "Oh good, meals on wheels. . . "

Today I was riding alone and come across another gator in the bike lane. Even though I was alone, I had the urge to make a chomping motion thinking about your post:)

Something that signaled an immeditate 180... Maybe 9 fingers, 1 finger, 1 finger? :)
Gator's are very common in Florida. Especially with all the construction going on.. They have no where to go except in the streets. Every golf course in Florida has a gator. Just don't feed them and they will leave you alone.. Unless some a**hole feeds them(which is illegal in Fla), and they get use to humans, they are as afraid of us as we are of them.. We have them in our lake and if I yell at one, it turns tail and runs!
The signal would be the brown stain in the back of my shorts.

I rarely tune in to watch this idiot, but on the odd occasion I have a mental lapse and forget to change the channel I spend more time cheering on the croc/snake/shark to attack than I do paying attention to whatever stupid thing he's doing to provoke them. Is this just a thing us Aussies do, or do some Americans feel the same way?
You have to be very careful because the Aligator sign is very similar to the Crocadile sign and you don't want to confuse anyone.

I haven't got the slightest idea, don't even have a TV (well I have a TV but the only things it's hooked up to is a PS2) ... the only way I found out about Steve Irwin was a a sketch I saw at an improv show mocking him. There's nothing funnier than a midget with a lisp saying "danger, danger, danger" as he swings wildly from a rope.
