Recreational & Family - Front Mounted child seats w/ drop bars

After searching the forum I see that almost all the front mounted child carriers are being used with hybrids or Mtbs that use either flat or those big upright kind of bars. Does anyone here use a front mounted child carrier with Drop bars. In addition I have barcon shifters.


What model do you use?

What have been your experiences with this kind of seat used with drop bars?

If you have barcons, have you encountered any problems using them or having the seat bump them?

get a trailer. bike mounted child carriers are just dangerous.

Thanks for that opinion....Did not answer the question. PLEASE FOLKS ... stick to the posted question and resist the temptation to interject your personal beliefs or opinions. If you have experience with from mounted child carriers I am interested in your actual experience.... If you do not have, or never used a front mounted child carrier, then you have no actual experience, do not post.

I use a front mounted carrier, Bobike Mini. It cannot be used with drop bars. I'm not saying that it wouldn't fit the bike. If you tried it, you most likely would not be able to reach the handlebars or your barcons since your kid would be in the way.

I use the carrier on a Bianchi Avenue (step through frame). The bars have a mild rise and I was able to adjust the position of the bars so its easy to reach without feeling too crowded up front. I also have the Bobike windsheild fitted which keeps the wind and bugs out of my toddler's face. I'd really like to set the bike up with some Orange Velo North Road bars or Tourist Bars, and a nice Brooks saddle. That would make the bike pretty comfy.

You see where I'm going with this? With a kid on the bike, you want your ride to be comfy for both of you. A road bike with drop bars is not IMO the way to go.

Thanks for the reply... Drop bars are the only bars I have. Another bike is not an option at this time. Ibert has been corresponding with me on this subject and supplied me with some measurements. It would appear their seat will work fine with my bars. Drop bars are still the most comfortable bars for me. I wont be taking my child on any of my centuries, doubles, or rando events, so I plan to remove the seat for those. So I am only looking at rides of 30 to maybe 50 miles with my boy. I can stand anything for that kind of distance.

your face will be pressed into your baby's ass -- that is the problem, not mounting. It'll be like being parked in front of a tree. You do see how this would be a problem right?

I can see the problem ok. But keep in mind not all roadies have their bars 6 inches below their saddles. Some of us actually have our bars set level to the saddle and favor a more upright riding position. Also I have LARGE drop bars. 48 cm wide!!!

It may be the only way I am going to answer this question is to actually order an Ibert and try it. If it works I will post pics. If not, then I can send it back.

no no, if you get it, definitely post pics. esp when it doesn't work -- you would have to be riding risers to even get close. Besides, the drops will be sitting in the footwells so the baby won't fit.

the reason for the second post. did you need an apology for my concern for children? no, i have never used a front mount carier but i do have children. ( who i have bicycled with.)

You might be able to stand it, but can your boy stand it? I don't know which seat you are considering, but the bobike doesn't have much head support. My 1 year old falls asleep in the seat after 15-20 minutes. And when she does fall asleep, I either have to pull over and let her sleep on the grass near the side of the road for a while, or use my elbows to cradle her head while I limp along at 5 miles an hour.

If you plan to take longish rides, perhaps a trailer is the better option. That way your kids can fall asleep and still be comfortable. Keep the front mounted seat for shorter trips.
