For those nice folks on the board that know what snow is, and experience foilage in the fall, I wanted to see how many go year around, and how many will stop commuting in Oct/Nov and take it up again in Feb/March/April. I live in Chicago, and - this being my first year - think I need to stop sometime in November, or do I?

How about a: September thru January category? :-)

At first I thought I was supposed to pick the months I did commute.

Where's the option for never stopping. It is possible to commute through the winter, even in areas much colder than Chicago. Plenty of people do, but you left no option in the poll for them.

Good point, I tried to go back and fix it, but I couldn't :-(

I'm a full-time, year-round rider. I'll skip if it's a blizzard outside, but I'll also skip if it's a hurricane. Normal rain, cold, wind, etc. aren't a problem. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so we don't often get snow, but I'll ride in that if the roads are reasonably clear. I don't put studs on my tires.

Year round. Couple days at the most I'll take off. There comes a time when there is just too much snow to ride in. Last year I wasn't prepared for a few days of -40F temperatures because my gloves and footwear weren't up to snuff. Bummed me out not riding those days.

I'm in Chicago too. I ride all year round as long as the roads are somewhat clear. Cold temperatures do not hinder me. Lots of snow and ice on the road does.

+1 for needing a never-stop option.

Year round here, too.

I call poll foul

I only stopped for a couple weeks, when the snow piles were so high on the roadside and middle of the street that there was literally just enough room for a wide car, no spare space to ride a bike. My city sux for clearing the roads on those rare times when we get enough snow to plow.

Year round. Even last winter when we actually had snow that lasted for more than a day. Made myself some wood screw studded tires for it.

Fingers crossed that next winter is more normal.

All year here too.

Year round. Plan A is: I go to work, which involves riding a bike. If I can't ride the bike, Plan B is: I take the day off.

Year round but not an option in your poll. Start over.

Also year rounder in the milder climate of NOVA.

Year round, but I live in Northern California, so our version of weather is pretty tame.

Well, there's clearly no need for "HTFU" comments around here.

Actually, I'm pretty tired of people being impressed by what we do. It's not impressive. Anyone can do it; we just do.

Year round. But of course, the worst of our winter probably looks like a pleasant spring day to our Great Lakes brethren.

Year round for me. I only missed a few days this Winter either due to too much snow fall over-night, or crazy wind (30 MPH stead with gusts to 75 or 80... than is NOT cool on a bike). Temperature has not stopped me yet. Coldest day was 2F. Most of the time the temps were in the teens in the morning from December till early March.

Happy riding,
André

Year round, but I'm a multi-mode commuter and I do most of it by bus in the winter. I live in suburbs east of Seattle and the only thing that stops my self-powered wheels is snow or hard ice. My commute is on arterials, and drivers here don't encounter snow often enough to make me feel comfortable sharing roads with them in snow. Was off the bike almost a month last winter due to an unusual extended period of icy roads.

Every single day. And I am also in chicago. Take the lane....or 'ruts' as the case may be. Use good lighting. Dress appropriately.
I even made it in to work that day last winter that was -15F actual temp and like -25F with the wind. Brutal.

Maybe there are more "all year" riders on this forum (myself included) than those who commute seasonally... The only thing that I'll stop for is ice - and it has to be serious ice.

LesterOfPuppets
06-24-09, 02:19 PM
I like ice better than untracked snow over 6" deep, chunked snow or slush, personally.

I don't have a car, and it takes at least 1/2 hour by bus, not to mention that the walk from my door to the bus stop, and from the bus stop to my office would have me in whatever weather for longer than just riding my bike. I was tested last year when we had snow on the ground for about 10 days... busted out the mountain bike, and was good to go.

So, I'm a "year-rounder" by default.

Uh - there's no 'year round' category in the poll...

No stop for me in Toronto - but I do less recreational riding in Dec-Feb.

Year round.
But then in January in Tucson you can get away with a windbreaker. And tights if you're a cold-wimp like me.
It's right now when it's like 105 out that people think you're crazy for riding a bike around.

Maybe you need a June-Aug option for us Arizonans. ;)

Year Round here.
Every once in a while I may take off a week or two, but I'm always back in less than a month.
(Exception-I had pneumonia Jan of 2008 and didn't ride for a month. Boy, was that a miserable time.)

Year round...it's a thing though between Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse to see who has the worst winter to ride in... surprisingly we folks in Buffalo have lost the last couple years...good contest to lose though.
