I'm feeling a little nutz so I'm contemplating catching a train to New Haven early tomorrow and then riding to Greenwich, meeting my mom, getting my rugrats and then driving home with her. Anyone have a preferred route? Anyone ever done this? Just curious what works best.

I think you're pretty much looking at Rt. 1 most of the way. Certain parts of New Haven can be a little nasty, though. There are some very nice towns along the way. I'd definitely get crazy and go for it!

I can't imagine riding on route 1 for more than a few blocks...if you are up for distance something much more roundabout would be a more fun ride. Playing around with google maps:

Something like that could work. You could probably edit that and stay a little closer to the shore. The problem is there just isn't a very good way to go east/west close to the coast that's not a highway or traffic-clogged Route 1. Might be more fun to take the train further to Fairfield or Westport and do more f a loop through Bethel, Ridgefield, Bedford, etc.

I like to use mapmyride.com to help me since it tends to keep me off of the highway. I think RT 1 was needed to cross the rivers in Milford and again in B'port. Unfortunately, the quality of the road surface in B'port completely thrashed my back tire at the 20 mile mark forcing me onto the train. I've never seen anything quite like it. The tube is fine, but the tire had a large bulge in it and to get it to spin I had to completely undo my brakes. And this was on my CX bike. I can't imagine what it would be like on my roadie. So we'll see what happens next time I think about doing something slightly crazy. Because there will be a next time.
