Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Can anyone explain the benefits...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Granted I'm new to these things, but this seems a bit odd:

well since the rear wheel is so huge, and it's fixed to teh gear I guess that means theres is mroe distance travelled per rotation of the sprocket.
Problem being....you now seem to have a mechanical disadvantage...since your crankset is far smallrr than your load (that hu-effing-mongous wheel)...so I bet it will be hard to get to speed...but I bet it's got some impressive top end.

I beleive they used to use this as an aero setup cause they could get nice and low at the front end. This was before aerobars. :p Or is it actually a normal front wheel and a huge ass rear? its hard to tell.

Aero experiment. It's worth a try. Imagine all the weird crap that's been tried that hasn't worked.
Here's to the innovators, whether they succeed or fail.

That bike was an expirement of some sort. Marcus at Yojimbo's has a picture of a similar bike, and on a slow day he explained to me that it was custom made, blah blah blah, I completely forgot. I know it was ridden a few times at least.
Moral of the story: Go to Yojimbo's, ask Marcus, and then buy something.

It looks like the crank arms would scrub going through corners. Maybe the bike was for motorpacing or the Bonneville Salt Flats?

Not very... no front brake...
Still, I'd ride it. Just because.
That looks like the bike Francesco Moser used in 1985 to attempt to break the hour record he set in 1984 in Mexico with this bike (btw, he used a 57x15 fixed gear  ) :

A short history of the above bike is here: hour record bike (http://www.marca.com/perico/eng/bicycle/today.html)
You can see the funky bike in use here:

Francesco Moser was/is a true original. You can visit his bike factory and museum in Trento. I think he also has vineyard.
