Mountain Biking - fork 'dings', crank creaks, discs rub, chain hits

hello there
i am new to biking, and have no idea what im doing, so bare with me here. thanks

I have the Marzocchi MZ-Race fork. whenever i go over a bump or something of the sort, it makes a ding sound.
Mostly when i pull up off curbs. it happens when the shock springs full out.

any way i can stop this?

whenever i apply pressure to my pedals, speeding up, something down there creaks. It doesn't sound right.

BTW the bike is a week old, 2004 Norco bigfoot

with that many problems you're better off taking it to the LBS to have it all fixed at once, but if it's all rideable do the work yourself. Most of it seems like stuff you can fix like the front derailuer is just the limiting screws, the brakes are just shims, the pedals are a problem with the bottom bracket, and i have no idea what you're talking about with the fork

The fork- The MZ race fork is nothing complicated. Just some oil and springs inside a tube. There's really nothing to go wrong. The "Ding" is just the fork "topping out" and some heavier oil inside should cure it, but that fork doesnt have alot in the way of adjustment otherwise.

The creaking when you pedal - means that either your cranks (most likely) or your bottom bracket is loose. Get an allen wrence and tighten down the cranks and if that doesnt take care of it, go to the LBS and have your Bottom bracket tightened up or greased because Im sure you dont have a BB tool.

What disc brakes do you have? Adjustment will be different with each brand so there's no answer to give you til i get specifics.

The front derailleur - When you say "hit" how do you mean? Cause if its just clanking around on the deraileur, that's normal. Or if its rubbing a bit, that can be ok too. But if somehow its "hitting" it, which i dont see as possible, there are a couple of adjustment screws that you can turn to elevat the der. or move it left and right...but what you describe sounds normal.

it makes my bike sound cheap. the derailleur doesn't line up correctly with the chain, and it makes a metal on metal rubbing sound. i can't really describe it.

btw my brakes are Hayes MX-2 6" Mechanical disc's

Check out the website. Tells you step by step how to setup the front derailleur and how to set the setscrews. Ive referred back to it many times

Ok, well on the der., just turn those little adjustment screws til it all lines up right. Its easy.

I had a set of hayes mechanicals before, and they sucked for adjustment...mainly because theyre not adjustable. What you can do though, is loosen up the bolts that connect the brake to the adapater so it kind of floats around a bit. Then pull your brake lever so the pads tighten down on the rotor. Keeping the pads tight, then tighten back the bolts you loosened. Then let off the brake and it should be better.

while what burly says about adjusting the brakes is true, one thing you might as well get used to is rub. With disc brakes that is the hazard.

Yeah it is friction which i suppose does slow you down. I just warp rotors pretty fast (bailing off my bike) so I just learn to live with some sound.

I just kick stuff on my bike when it makes noise. Stupid walmart bikes. :) Just kidding. Take it to the LBS or if you feel brave try to fix it with the advice above :D

And to clear a few things up. Don't kick your bike parts ever to fix stuff. It'll just mess it up more. And I have a $1,500 Haro I was kidding about walmart :p

heh kicking it to fix it. my buddy fliped his norco last night. tried jumping a garbage can. messed up his right gear shifters pretty bad. first thing he did, was lay it down, and give the shifters a nice swift kick.
