Northeast - Bike Insurance in NY?

Is there such a wonderful thing as bicycle insurance? It would be nice to ride my bike and not have to worry about it getting stolen and being left empty handed!

I don't know if there is any or not but I would imagine the rates would be pretty high given the amount of bike thefts in the city.

If you have home owners or renters insurance you're probably covered, but check your deductable vs. the value of your bike.

There was a company that had a plan like AAA, but it didn't cover a lot of areas and seemed expensive

Kryptonite (http://www.kryptonitelock.com/CustomerService/FAQ.aspx#warrantyNY) has limited one year coverage if your bike is stolen while using one of their New York locks. But the lock has to be damaged in the process and you have to return the lock to them when you make a claim.

Bike theft sucks, but let's face it, your bike could get stolen at any time and that's just how it goes. I.e. don't lock up a bike outside for a long period of time if you can't afford to replace it.

I was just curious, because they have computer insurance these days and computers break often too (and cost around the same!).

I registered my bike with the 20th Precinct a few years ago, even though I actually live in a different precinct, because they were doing bike registrations as a prelude to Bike Month. Try contacting the crime prevention officer in your local precinct. They engrave a number on the bottom and give you a certificate with that number.

There is a national bike registration service. I 've used that. Not sure how good it is. But on the bottom of my Klein is a sticker warning that the bike's serial number is on file...
Insurance companies.. It's for suckers. They might pay out an initial claim.. Good luck. Anyone find a reliable insurance plan for bikes and air travel. let me know. I've yet to find one..

No one's doing it now, though they did provide a phone number to call for more information (which I might do soon).
