Advocacy & Safety - listening to music (ipod/iphone) while riding

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I hope this doesn't cross any forum lines (if so, admins please feel free to move/delete this), but here goes...
I created an iPhone app called Adaptunes. It controls the volume of any music you're playing based on how fast you are traveling (via iphone3g or 3gs gps). There is also a 'shake' setting that allows it to work with older iphones and the iPod touch. I came up with it as a solution for listening to music while snowboarding, but it works really well for riding as well -- basically works the same way some car stereos do in the way that the volume will raise as you go faster. I've tried this out on my mountain bike and it works perfectly -- although i personally am not all that concerned about lowering the volume while i ride single track. I don't road bike anymore, but I would think that this might be a nice solution for those who like to listen to music on the road.
I know some folks aren't into the idea of listening to music when they ride, and i guess this app might not ease those feelings any, but I kinda feel like this could make for a somewhat safer experience than just cranking your music and drowning out the sounds of traffic/people/etc. around you
If your interested in checking it out, here's web site with more info download http://www.adaptunes.com/.
If you have any feedback or feelings on this, I'd love to hear it.

Do you allow it to be customized to act in reverse that the fast you go, the quieter it gets? The faster youre going the more likely you are to need to be able to hear warnings ahead

Not yet, and honestly I had not considered that functionality but the version 1.1.2 (2 releases out from the current version) will allow for more accurate control of the speed that triggers a volume change as well as the specificity of the volume change itself. So, to answer your question.... yes it will be possible. It's at least 2 weeks out though.
Thanks for the question!

Do you ride so fast your eyes close? What audible but unseen "warnings ahead"that an Ipod is capable of masking could you possibly "need"?

I appreciate the OP's innovation, but I can't help but think this thread will quickly become the third headphones-related trainwreck in as many weeks.
I'll be waiting.
When I listen to music, I listen to music. When I ride a bicycle on the road or off, I focus continuously and intently on watching and listening for hazards. I seldom have a close call when I am paying full attention.

When I chew gum, I chew gum AND blow bubbles; amazingly I can safely ride my bike and listen to audio books, all at the same time. None of those tasks require Rocket Science Brand "full attention".

You probably won't want his app.
Wow, a stealth discussion about riding and listening to music.

How very special for you. You should learn to PAY FULL ATTENTION to a discussion. You will seldom make irrelevant comments if you pay full attention.

My bad if i've kicked a bee's nest with this post.
I haven't been on this site for a while (lost my original username/pass so i started a new one) but i remember coming across more than one thread arguing the music while riding thing. Personally I OFTEN have a close call when I am paying full attention -- The burdens of a.d.d. i suppose. Some tunes thrown into my ride aren't going to make me any worse off.
I like the functionality of this app because I can ride with friends and now when i slow down I can communicate with them vs. seeming like a ****** for ignoring what they are saying as a result of not hearing them.
Hopefully this doesn't fuel more back and forth of "i ride with music vs. your dumb for riding with music". Eh, maybe it'll remedy it.

I was on cyclingnews.com today and saw an ad for audiobike.com It looks like the a great way listen to music and not wear headphones. I ride some busy roads and need to be able to hear the traffic. I went ahead and bought one.

I'm doing fine with those manual volume controls.
