Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - hey chicagoans

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Where can I find a good set of wheels in Chicago for my track bike? I'm looking for something w/ a Surly rear hub. Some one told me to check out Urban Bikes on North Broadway. I just moved to the area and haven't gotten to know which bike shops are fixie friendly. Thanks!. x Haley

I don't really have any good suggestions, but I'm a relative Chi Town n00b myself. I'm wondering - where are you at? If you're another north-sider...
Urban bikes sells two types of rear wheels. The first and cheaper is a Suzue laced to a Mavic MA3 for $119. The second is a Surly laced to an MA3 for $164. No one else has them already set up. I spoke with Marcus a while ago and he doesn't have any built up but can build you one though it'd cost much more with labour too.
Man, the Chicago contingent is growing - meetup soon. Who's down?
I have a rear wheel marcus (yojimbo's!) built up for me a 2 years ago. I don't recall what it is because it's been completely trouble free since day one. He owes me a free truing that I've never needed.

Surly MA3 for $164. seems expensive, recently bought one here for $120 from the bike co-op. Very happy with it though.

You might also check out Boulevard Bikes in Logan Square. I don't what they keep in stock but they will order from Quality, which should have a decent price on the Surly combo you seek.

1)meet at cuttin crewz
2)Kevin, the homie womie, proprietor of boulevard bikes, sells a suzue basic hand built for 85 bux. cheep!
3)Want one of the best wheels in town? Have marcus build it.
Upgrade probably also has stuff.
I've heard good things about Boulevard from friends who live close by but have yet to go - should check it out soon.
The Cuttin Crew - I was curious, do you have to race?

I was curious, do you have to race?
depends on what you mean by race.
Pay the entry fee, ride around the city hitting checkpoints (aka - no Officer, it's not a race, it's a scavenger hunt), meet some cool people, hang out afterwards.

There's an easy answer: leave that state that should recede anyways and move to this city, the best in the country. My opinion, of course.

Since that might take awhile, how about they secede in the meantime?

Didn't want to start a new Chicago forum... but wanted to drop in and ask if there were other south-side fixie riders around? I just got my first and am looking to ride with people who know what they're doing. I'm in Hyde Park.... commute between the field museum and 57th street pretty much every day. haven't done much in the city 'cept the lake-path. . . . still waiting on some pedals for the fixed gear though, i picked it up on ebay and the seller forgot to include them.

I don't personally know many south siders... a different country if you ask me. However, there have to be a few, Mayo for instance.

I have a track wheelset I would sell: Miche hubs, Ambrosio rims, tied/soldered spokes.. Built by Woody from Upgrade (he is a good wheel builder). I have about $340 into these with parts and labor. I would sell them for $200 if you are interested. I'm in Wicker Park; I can meet up anywhere in Chicago basicly. I'll post a picture momentarily.

South side - yet another girl who rides fixed I know over there. V goes to U of C, is in a PHD med grad program, had the goddamn biggest Chrome bag ever (and a Freitag) and rides a Raleigh fixie with Campy parts or a baked bean Surly Steamroller. She still has my Travis Culley book. Which reminds me that I need to get that back.

Raleigh fixie with Campy parts
orange Raleigh, front brake, and yellow/black bartape?
I haven't seen V since earlier this year -- the Raleigh was reddish, last time I saw it.

From the Lake to the cornfields, from Chinatown to Indiana, I've got most of the South Side memorized. I've said it before, I'll say it again, anyone ever wants to do a Tour of the South, just let me know. We can leave from Promontory Point and go as long as you want. Wednesday (6/30), noon, is good for me.

I didn't want to start a new thread either but I'm looking for a set of used bullhorns. My budget is tight right now so cheap is good.

I've got a set of cinelli road bars I chopped down..they are super sharp! (literally, as I never filed or smoothed the edges after hacking them down...boy, are they dangerous for peds!)

Hey. With the sharpened edges they may be a solution to ultra-g's problems.
