View Full Version : Snag in shorts?

I did a 70 mile ride yesterday (well, technically it was 66.7 -- my farthest ride so far!) and when I got home I realized that my Pearl Izumi Attack shorts had a snag in two spots. Both snags are on the outside of the shorts (not the inside, so when I reference "the padding" don't be confused and think it's on the inside or the padding is ruined. The padding is fine.) One snag is to the left of the padding and is about two inches long. The other snag is smaller and at the top/rear of the padding.

These shorts have seen about 300 miles of riding at most and have been used between five and ten times; machine or hand washed and always hung to dry. I can't imagine that this is normal "wear and tear" and there is nothing on my saddle that would cause the shorts to catch.

The shorts are not too small nor are they tight. I feel that they fit just fine.

Should I expect shorts to have a "wear pattern" from my legs moving up and down (and sometimes against the saddle)? If I should, after how many miles?

I've ruined several shorts with rips that came as a result of my inner thighs grazing the clamp where the seat connects to the seatpost. This was with an American Classic seatpost and Vetta SL saddle.

After I got my Brooks B-17N a few years ago the problem went away since the Brooks has the "ears" that hang down over the problem area and protect my shorts.

Do you have an embroidered seat (stitching protruding thru seat)? I have had a couple of pairs wear through in just 2 or 3 rides and finally just put a $3 seat cover on the saddle. Haven't had an troube since then.

It turns out that my saddle bag that has velcro straps to hold it in place. Well, I didn't have the straps completely tucked away under my saddle, so with each stroke a bit of the velcro was rubbing/snagging my shorts. And after 70 miles it had chewed up a bit of the fabric on my inner thigh. (The rubbing was light enough that I didn't notice it while riding.)

Note to self: ensure saddle bag straps are tucked away before riding.

Thanks, Moonshot and Downhill Racer, you pointed me in the right direction.

Velcro can do a lot of damage to shorts and jerseys. Another lesson I learned a few years ago is to make sure you close the velcro straps on gloves before throwing them in the wash with your shorts...
