Based on what? We have two in my garage and they are very well designed bikes. A great value for the price, in fact.

Overrated only on this forum. In real life, I've only ever seen one. There's a guy I sometimes pass on my commute that has a Karate Monkey. I'm intrigued by the cross-check and/or LHT myself, but I already own two nice commuters (a touring bike and a hybrid), so it's hard to justify getting another bike that isn't much different than what I already have.

I have a new surly cross check, about 175 miles on it. Great bike for the money.

My LHT is the Swiss army knife of bicycles. Its heavier, bulkier, and more complex than I usually need it to be, but its gets the job done 99.9% of the time. I have other bikes I ride for enjoyment.

I have a surly 1x1 , it's a " do anything, ride anywhere type of a bike". I love it.

Why should I hate them? They've never done anything to me. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Troll thread.

Let's see:

7500 miles on my Cross Check in the last 18 months. Includes commuting through 2 snowy (for here) winters, over a dozen centuries, 2 doubles, and I've earned my ACP 200k and 300k medals on it. I'll be earning my 400k medal on it in August.
It was reasonable priced, is comfortable, and hasn't fallen apart underneath me. Yeah... totally over-rated.

I don't get it ?? Why would OP even try to start a hate thread about a 'Brand',which has been proven to be, a great and very versatile frames by thousands of riders all over.

I'm pretty sure you are thinking about the guy with 'jack' in his name, not that guy.

Surly's aren't bad bikes at all, but I think the whole steel thing is overrated. In comparison to wheel, seat and seatpost flex, frame flex is so minimal I don't see how it could be noticeably measured at all. Plus you can just use smaller diameter aluminum tubing to make it flex more.

I would love to have a Titanium frame, though.

Far as I know Surlies aren't too well known in these parts. Even roadies will draft,
checking out my BD before they pass with a smile and a thumbs up.
One Sunday morning on a rural road, I heard the best car beep-beep ever.
An old guy in a Model T waved and gave me a thumbs up as he passed.
I waved and returned a thumbs up on his Model T.
I believe he used his smallest bulb horn in a friendly way.:)

I would love to have a Titanium frame, though.

The Australian Ride magazine provides 3 graphs of flex, one at the front, BB and at the back. Static tests are of limited use, but they do provide a general idea of what the bike is about.

In addition to measurements, there is something the Bike Quarterly guys call planing. That is where the frame has some give in the BB, but seems to turn some
of that energy back into propulsion. Sounds weird, but my bike has it. It's one of the things that seperates the good steel from the great.

Because I am a Clydesdale, and a little bit strong, I have real issues with frame flex.
Both with too much and too little. I had a Cannondale in the late 80's that had so little flex it put me in the doctor's office. And I have tried a couple bikes that had way too much flex. One of the early aluminum bikes, it was from either the late 70's or early 80's, when I got on it it was like riding overcooked spagetti.

Btw, I had a Ti bike, an Airborne Carpe Diem. The rear end was too short and stiff for me so I gave it to Sis. She likes an upright seating position so I put a B67 on it, some old motorcycle style bars, and a suspension stem. Nice stem. I call it The World's Most Expensive Hybrid.

Which part of Surlys actually suck, sir?

Would it be the actual quality BB they place in them? Perhaps the decent crank, or is it that ****ty pair of Salsa Delgado rims coupled with AVID BB7 brakes? The Ritchey Logic sealed cartridge head or just the Steel frame w/ a solid paint job?

I know in comparison to your FSA crank, .50 cent BB and sketchy "Whatever we can throw on this ****ing frame" set of rims coupled with jack**** hubs, head, chain and silly ass $50 frame, the Surly is definitely 'low budget' but some of us will just have to make do.

Yes I know your a troll.

But did you know that your $399 special only cost $119 wholesale? So really, you're just riding a bike even WalMart passed on because they were only one step cheaper than you:)

Hey now, I ride a BD bike...in fact I ride the same BD bike. And I rather like it.

That being said, I have dreams of a Big Dummy sometime in my future. And a Pacer frame for some of the spare parts I have lying around.

Maybe the LBS he is affiliated with doesn't sell it and its competitors do.

If you look early in this thread, the OP was whining about the lack of "bike talk." Apparently, there has been too much "locks" and "lights" discussion for his taste, hence the intentional flame baiting.
If he would have slammed a brand other than Surly, it might not be so troll obvious.
But hey.... it worked didn't it. Look at all this bike discussion. :-)

(BTW... +1 on the 1X1 ! I really like mine. )

Over-rated!

I have been called a lot worse in this Forum than Girly.

I have an LHT and a Pugsley. The Trucker is a nice rugged frame for the $$. The Puglsey is, well, extreme. But you can't touch anything like it for double the price. The next closest thing is $1300 for just the frame and fork - see: (wildfirecycles.com (http://www.wildfirecycles.com/bike%20shop.html)) Moots made a one-off "fat bike" and a trailer for it (Photo (http://thelazyrando.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/fatbike.jpg)) that I am sure cost a million bucks if they would even build another one for that amount.

So troll on brother. Those who own Surlys usually love 'em. Where I live it is getting a bit hipster to own one, but I can live with that too.

I think Surly products are great overall, but there's no reason for excessive brand loyalty.

Here are my problems with Surly.
1. Surly frames are somewhat overpriced, IMO. For instance, Soma makes numerous frames similar to Surly frames that cost about the same, but Soma's are made from better steel.
2. The bearings and hardware on Surly hubs are a PITA, and the hubs are overpriced. You can get better hubs for less.
3. I bought a Surly fixed gear cog a few years ago...it was louder and wore out faster than any other fg cog I have ever used.

Surly makes a wide enough range of frames that to say they are categorically overrated is IMO BS on the part of the OP. The Pugsley and Big Dummy are bikes virtually without serious competition from other US makers or distributors. If one model is not your cup of tea then choose something else, even a different make.

After all beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Ah, I remember 13 years old like it was yesterday. "You kissed a girl? That's so gay!"
