Folding Bikes - Collected my new bike and yes it’s a....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Well here is a quick photo taken once I arrived home.
It is a 1963 Moulton Speed made the same year that I was born. :D
Colour looks orange in the photos but is tomato red. It has been touched up/ repainted in places and the Moulton decals have been replaced at some point. The seller told me that it did have drop bars on it but they had been cut down by the previous owner. It has a 5 speed derailleur which seems a bit unusual?
Been for a quick ride and it seems OK.... bit of play in the front wheel axel bearings and the gear indexing needs adjusting.... but for a 46 year old bike I’m very happy and I think £115 was a good price? :thumb:
It came with a set of ugly crud catcher mud gaurds which I took off before even lifting the bike out of my truck.
I’m planning on replacing the bars with drops and I’d like to end up with a bike that resembles this:

Amazing the style of that bike in no way looks 45+ years old!
£115 an great price : I thought these bikes were snapped up for five to ten times that and shipped to Japan.
You will soon be speeding along the roads in dual suspension comfort.
I like the tail.

Beautiful bike !
My friend has a Speed that is equipped with an Sa 4 speed and full Campy Record everywhere else... it is one of the nicest bikes I have ever seen.
He also has 3 AM models that are fitted with a number of different drives and believe he has an SA ASC equipped model in the works.

Sweet bike! I see a few in Japan, but they are the new ones made by Bridgestone.
I don't know much about bike technology, but the suspension system look to be way ahead of its time for 1963 !?!
Can anyone suggest a site explaining Moulton's design principle ?

Did take a quick look at the Moulton side. And the really seem to make this kind of bike in 1960.

Nice looking bike you have there. I'd be curious to see a picture of it folded.

What is that tube jutting out from the seat tube? Does it have a function, or is it purely aesthetic?

On a speed it kinda is a bit redundant, but it exists so one might fit a bespoke Moulton rack to the bike...

AHHHHHHRG! It's making me nuts! I just wanna hack saw it off!
Wow, that made me laugh :lol::lol::D
I will post some more info tomorrow and maybe I can get some suggestions on how to modify the bike. :thumb:
I’ve only just got home from collecting some green mambas for work...... long drive in a very uncomfortable little French hire van, so I need a rest now.:twitchy:

That is so sweeeet, I want it....gimme it NOW!!
A friend of mine owns a tangerine Speed S as well, he is a fanatic on keeping things original...except for the 72t front ring!!
I’m going to have another look at the bike this evening. I have been reading as much as I can but have still not found reference to a 5 speed derailleur option. The derailleur says Shimano's Deore XT which IIRC dates from around 1982 so obviously not original to the bike.
I want to replace the flat bars with drops which it did have originally. I don’t know what make of drop bars were used by Moulton or if I can find a set or will any standard drop bars do?
The decals have been replaced so is it really a “speed”? I’m sure it wouldn’t have had “Bradford upon Avon” written on the frame from new.
I’m probably going to go along with Little Pixels suggestion of a nicely modified bike rather than be a purest.... so I might be getting the hack-saw out at some point...at least Black Bike would be happy:thumb:

I think you will find the original components were Campag, at least that's what is on my friend's Speed S.

Thanks, brommie . I'll try to get hold of some of Tony Hadland's books on the Moultons :thumb:
Nice buy, I was watching this one too, but went for the Becak instead (as I already have a very early rivet-framed Moulton 3-speed.
I've read a lot about Speed 6s, but even my friend who has more Moultons than anyone I know (including a Speed 6) didn't think that there was a Speed 5. I could be wrong.
As most of you will know, this particular model is not a folder, but Moulton did do a break in two version.
You got a good deal IMHO! :thumb:

I called into my friend's business, ( www.britishsportingcars.com.au/ ) this morning to check out his Moulton, and indeed it is a Speed 5.
Components are 1960's Campag Nouvo Record RD and barend shifter, Cinelli drops and Weinmen centre pull brake levers.
Oh yeah, the front chain ring is a 74 tooth driving a close ratio 5 speed cluster, so top gear is 74tx12t......He was my State's time trial champion when he was younger!!
I will take some pics to show you guys how nice and mean it looks.

Just curious what are the tubes made of? Is it Reynolds or some other Chrome - moly.
Sweet looking ride! My neighbor has a dark green touring version with milk crate on rear rack.
