My bicycle was stolen June 8th at 4:35pm. How the theft occurred:
1) a French speaking woman emailed in response to my bike for sale ad, subsequent email exchanges took place, she asked for my phone number (instead of giving hers), she used the name “Nora”
2) “Nora” called and set up a time to view the bike, asked for the address, asked for directions
3) “Nora” sent a text message when she was at my address
4) “Nora” gave me her bag to hold while she "test rode" my bike
5) “Nora” took off on the bike and never returned
6) the bag she let me hold was empty except for a water bottle
7) the local phone number she called from was a pay phone
8) a man answered the number from which I received her text message and claimed not to know she was going to steal

I fell for this scam and lost a valuable bike.

Physical description of the female bike thief:
French speaking, used the name "Nora"
Caucasian with very tan skin
Long dark straight brown hair (almost to her waist)
Nicely dressed with slim fitting slacks
About 27 - 32 years old
About 5’3” – 5’5” tall
Very slender, about 110 pounds

Other details about “Nora”:
She called from this pay phone, 212-243-9789, on Monday June 8th at 3pm
On June 8th she bought shoes, red flats, from Steven [529 Broadway at Spring St. NY NY 10012] (Steve Madden shoes)
She was staying at a Williamsburg Hostel [318 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211] between S 1st and S 2nd Streets
She may have been at the Elm Place Café [25 Elm Place, Brooklyn, NY 11201]
She was in NYC on vacation

“Nora” had help from:
Jalil Ourguedi sent emails for her from his account: wadji75@hotmail.fr
Jalil is French speaking, 6' 2" tall, 170 pounds, darker skin, brown hair, black eyes
Jalil met "Nora" at the Williamsburg Hostel (details above)
Jalil Ourguedi removed his picture from his facebook page two days after this crime
Jalil subsequently removed his entire facebook page from the web 1 week after this crime
A man sent text messages from: 011 33 615 606 117 (French mobile number, area code 615, Orange France phone provider) to arrange the "test ride"/theft

Description of my stolen bike:
Silver Dahon Helios folding bike. The fenders, rack and rear light shown in the pictures have been removed. There is a Velo GelTech lycra cover over the seat. I would greatly appreciate any help finding my bike!!!

I attached pictures of the Steve Madden shoes that she bought.

i've read of similar stories in craigslist LA sellers

they come to do a test ride and you never see them.

another story is they take your bike for a test ride out of sight and then they loosen the parts brakes, derailleurs, remove the air on the tires etc and then they say the bike is broken and need repairs and they offer you half the price

Wow! With all of the info you have and electronic footprints, it would seem like the police would be able to help you.

Read the title and post carefully, it doesn't sound like it's the OP's bike, but rather something he came across on Craig's List.

My friend has his beater stolen the same way but it was just a normal guy with no accent. My buddy didn't ask for any collateral and the dude just rode off with his bike.

Impossible! Nothing is more nefarious than a man or woman with an accent!

Always arrange to follow a "test ride" on another bike and if they can drop you, you lose.

Unless you also have a forty four in your pocket....

Nasty though.

When I was a kid my younger brother was approached by a man while he was doing his paper delivery round. The guy had run up and down the street and looked distressed and appeared to be searching for something. He said to Pete, 'Have you seen a brown wallet along here? I have lost my wallet with my whole weeks wages in it.'

The fellow really seemed to be distressed and started to go away then came back and asked Pete if he could borrow the bike for a minute. Pete had just bought it (aged about 13) after working and saving for six months. He readily agreed, having been brought up to help a person in need.....

You know the rest - except that Pete toured the second hand bike shops for weeks and soon found it for sale. He went to the police station and one of them went with him and got it back for him.

Because the reciept was in the backpack she left? A local bike shop allowed some guy to ride out on a really expensive road bike (his car was parked in the lot). Turns out, the car was stolen.
