My family threw Rachelle's wedding shower this weekend in Michigan, so we drove up for the weekend to see my family and do the shower. On saturday, Rach and I passed the time with 15 miles on the bike, and a mile in the pool, that was relatively slow, and completely uneventful other than some wind.

Sunday, during the shower, I needed something to occupy myself, so I decided to go visit my father (he has a part-time post-retirement job at Cabela's) at work to buy him lunch, and I decided to ride there from my parents. Their house is a little over 14 miles away from the store, so I knew I could do the initial distance to my dad's work, as I've ridden this far several times including during my most recent triathlon.

So, I got on the bike at 1:00 PM, and was at Cabela's at 2:06. It was a little slower than normal for me, because there was a gusting headwind on the ride for the 4 miles heading west that also affect me some heading north. Average pace was 13.4 MPH. Felt it was a strong ride through, and I had a great lunch with dad.

The ride home felt easier, and I'm sure it was a little wind aided on the eastbound segments, but it was mostly just that the gusts weren't slamming me in the face. I managed to get my average speed for the whole trip up to 14.1, so I'm guessing I averaged 15 or so on the trip home. The last couple of miles, I really cooked it, and even spent a good bit of the last mile in 14th gear, cruising between 18 and 21 MPH.

Then, as I turned into the driveway, doing about 10 or 11 MPH, I missed that there was a little area of sand at the base of the driveway. I leaned into the turn, and subsequently wiped out on the asphalt driveway. Thankfully, I had my gloves, helmet, and a pair of shorts over my tri shorts. Sadly, my right knee was the recipient of my first road rash. I had several decent sized pieces of gravel, and an object that was clearly a small stone embedded in my knee, but was otherwise unharmed. I put the bike away, drove to where the shower was being held (it was over by this time), and had my fiancee, a certified athletic trainer, take care of the injury.

When we got back to my folks and looked at the bike, I saw that the bike had similar minor injury. An "arm" or "elbow", a metal sleeve that keeps the brake line protected as it came into the front brake, and I'm sure functions to keep the correct tension, had been crimped. Also, the left grip on the handlebars was torn at the end. I've been wanting to replace that anyways. Hopefully I want have to order a full brake kit to get that piece.

Anyways, it was a really FUN ride, and I can now tell The Historian I did a ride longer than 15 miles in a day!! It ended eventfully, but there was no crying or permanent injury so all's good.

A minor fall is a good reminder that cycling has it's risks. Sounds like you had a nice weekend overall.

Cheers,

Michael

Great job! When I was building mileage last year, it seems like I had to add just a mile or two at a time until I got up to 20, and then after that, I could add 5 or more miles at a time without much trouble. Of course, then I was really intelligent and jumped from 64 to 101 at one time.

Yeah, it was long past time. I basically doubled the mileage I had done in a day, but I had known I'd be able to handle it for quite a while. I also had an hour break in-between the 14 mile rides, so that gave me a chance to recoup. The only part other than the fall at the end that was troublesome was getting saddle pain after a while. I have a pretty inexpensive saddle that's mostly comfortable for the first 14 miles, and I stand up to give myself a rest. As of yet, I dont ride out of the saddle, but I will stand on the pedals.

Once I get the bike fixed this week, I'll probably do another couple of longer rides in the coming weeks.

Ain't it just so much fun scrubbing the debris out of the road rash? :p :twitchy:

Welcome to the crash club, techno......to paraphrase the Geurreros Brothers from WWE, "If you ain't crashin'....you ain't tryin'!":bike2:

Thankfully it was a minor crash!

Yep, and the other good news is that performance stocks that elbow that got crimped, and it sounds like it's only a couple $ in order to replace it. I can fix it myself, I believe, just need to get it replaced.

Samaria/Temperance/Lambertville, Bedford township area.

First serious girlfriend lived in Dundee. Spent plenty of time in Toledo. I saw your pic from the Galaxy Diner. Used to go there after nights at Club Bijou where the DJ was a friend, and I'd get free Car Crashes, and hit on the chickies.

Bummer about the little get off Tech. Marrying a Cetified Athletic Trainer is a smart move. I have a little bit of an orthopedic surgery hobby and found that marrying into the medical profession has some distinct advantagfes, lol.

Sorry to hear about your crash, but at least it was low speed! A word of caution- check your helmet over very carefully. If the foam or shell look disturbed in any way, even if it's just a scuff on the shell, replace it.

Sorry to hear about your crash. I've been fortunate so far. My worst was a zero speed fall when I couldn't get my right foot unclipped from the the peddles. Sigh. I had the left one unclipped but the bike shifted just before I stopped and I couldn't get my food out fast enough.

When you ride them you wreck them!! This goes for anything with wheels. The good thing is your OK!

This needs some explanation. I've been pushing TKGN, both publicly and via PM, to take a longer ride. He's been more than ready, and I sensed he had a barrier of some kind preventing him from tackling a longer spin. Perhaps I was out of line to do so.

Congratulations, TKGN, for your ride, and I'm glad your injuries were minor.

NOT AT ALL, kind sir! In fact, in the past couple of weeks, I had gotten to the point where it was more finding the time to do it, especially now that I don't have a race on the near horizon. I'm going to buy the part to get the bike back to operational tonight, and then hopefully be back on it in a few days. Right know bending and unbending the knee hurts enough along the road rash where I'd rather stay off of it.
