Touring - Seatpost bags and carbon fibre seatposts

Tricross sport, carbon fibre seatpost. Considering getting an Epic Designs seat bag which mounts directly off the seat post. Bad idea? I have this vague bad feeling about it, but wondered if anyone had any experience to share.

If it's the type that has attaches to the seatpost with velcro, that would work very well with a CF seatpost.

Adding a few extra pounds should be just fine. The only time a seatpost-mounted bag could cause a real issue with CF is if it has a clamp-type arrangement, and you apply too much torque when attaching it. Somehow, I don't think you need a torque screwdriver with velcro. ;)

go tomson elite and be worry free :) if you have any reservations about it being able to hold up. My carbon bike has a tomson. weighs less than most carbon and failure isn't something I have to worry about.

Why not use a Carradice saddlebag and support mounted to the seat. If you only need a small amount of gear the smaller bags don't need any support.

Overall, carbon fiber isn't really a smart material to make seatposts from. In most cases alloy is stronger and lighter. If I were you I'd change seatposts.

Well the thing is huge and will cantilever lots of weight off the seat post regardless. Will still say go Alloy

CF is fine. It's just as strong, soaks up a few more bumps, just watch the torque. (They are in fact typically lighter, but the difference is negligible.)

I wouldn't sweat it unless you weigh 250 lbs and plan to put another 50 lbs into the bag.

Thanks for the tips, people. I understand the prejudice against CF seatposts, but since I already have one (two, in fact...) I'd need some pretty strong evidence to swap it out I think. Guess it's time to google "carbon fibre torque" :)
