Alt Bike Culture - Basic cruiser bike plus longboard rack

I need to get a cruiser bike and then attach a rack to hold a longboard (surfboard).

Just from what i see in the city (NYC), i notice that a lot of them are Schwinns.

This is what I will probably get without any input:

I know that people have home-made skimboard racks, and I'm sure that people have made surfboard racks too.

I would love to see what something like that would look like off the side of my short wheel base recumbent...but I live many miles from the beach SO..............................

Mastershake916, yes, I'm definitely putting a carver surf rack it, forgot to mention that. I know people who have built their own out of pvc tubing and can get materials from the hardware store and instructions off the internet but i don't have the time for that.

Anybody got an opinion on the schwinn cruiser? or anybody got a favorite cruiser?
I'm not so much a fan of the curved top tube (the retro style)...

In my mind, the only bikes that can really be called cruisers are the ones with curved top tubes. The motorcycle imitation is kind of the defining characteristic.

Yeah, that's pretty much what makes a cruiser.
The target schwinns aren't the best, but the will be alright (if you or a bike mechanic can tune it up) if you don't mind not having a coaster brake. (it's a 6 speed plus handbrakes). You can also scour craigslist and should be able to find a cool and (in most cases) a very tough bike. but remember to grease everything, especially coaster brake hubs, with wither heavy duty grease, "Marine Grease".

Single-speed - no need for frills, plus pretty flat terrain.
Now it's a matter of finding a bike shop that will give me a good deal... just thinking about calling around...but if anyone has any suggestions i'm all ears. Thanks.

Quality wise, pretty much all bike shop cruiser are the same, mainly it's how they're tuned.
That said, I would call around (or better yet visit) an bunch of bike shops in your area and get what their prices are on their cruiser (schwinn and otherwise).
