Is it just me, or do I ride faster when I am drunk? Put 3 beers in me, and I am golden. Not for distances over 10 miles but for short sprints, it just feels like I am riding much faster. Any of you other riders notice the same experience, or am I just high??

Phil

P.S. Do you think it might have to do with my careless cruising through most stop lights/signs??

It just feels faster, trust me. I have documented this phenomenon through independent research using my bike with a accurate speedo.

wait, turns out tonight there was a 15-25 mph wind at my back, I guess I was really going faster, so my drinking didn't help...

I think I slow down less, thus the feeling of going faster....

Goatmeal - should we do an 8am scientific experiment when I get off of work? You've got the bike computers, right?

goatmeal

Yeah, I have about 10 of em in the basement, but I haven't had any hooked up to any bike for about a year. A friend of mine who is even more into bikes than myself sells me lots of 5++ computers for 10-15$, mostly off of bikes he buys used. Most of the time I just don't feel the need to clock my speed, I can tell when I am going fast vs. slow...

Phil

(Although I might be down for a 8am ride, call me when you get off of work)

I dunno about the rest of the world but here in Kansas driving a bicycle while drunk gets you a DUI. I also have to say that considering how bad the drivers are here i would always want to be sober to keep an eye on THEM.

You did notice Goatmeal said put 3 beers in him and he's golden, right?

It's probably enough to put him over the limit if he were shotgunning them, but it's not gonna hurt reflexes too much at that point...

If I get TOO drunk before I ride, I don't feel like I'm going faster, cause I'm going a lot slower and apt to fall over :) Get the start of a nice buzz and go out for ride, now that's the stuff...

I seem to just hit more bushes when riding with 5 or 6 in me.

I rode under the influence of a few the other night. Didn't seem to go much faster, although my perception of speed may have sense something faster. I wouldn't advise doing this a whole lot. You could end up wanting to be drunk all the time, and then where would you be?

Not a very smart thing to do IMHO. Reflexes are slowed, judgement impaired, if a quick thinking and reacting descision had to be made it could spell the end for not only you, but a unexpecting bystander as well.

I've ridden drunk before, I find it much different than driving after one beer... reflexes are technically slower, however - you're also circulating your blood faster and pumping and whatnot - mind you nothing scientific but I find my reflexes are similarly on par with just a drink or two... I'm actually not quite sure how to explain it... but you're not just sitting there like a dumbarse pushing a pedal and steering a wheel - you're... working... I duno.... as for the speed - its all perception.

Now, riding exhausted - that's just terrible.

More than a couple beers, I start biking really fast, and then I remember I have no dental insurance and get a maybe not-so-irrational fear of flying over my handlebars and breaking my teeth.

Ridin' drunk, not so much a problem. Playing ice hockey loaded...whole different story.

" I dunno about the rest of the world but here in Kansas driving a bicycle while drunk gets you a DUI"

Can't take away a license you dont have. I guess they could fine you, but the penalty in most states for failure to pay driving-related offenses is nothing more than revokation of driving privledges. Can't revoke a privledge you were never granted.

Drink away!!

I predict that this thread will be invaded by non regulars to this section of bike forums and they will try to come down hard upon such irresponsible cycling. Just you wait.
Too bad I gave up all that perception altering stuff, some of it might have been really interesting on a bike.

Actually it wasn't even 3 beers, I split a bottle of wine with my wife over dinner. While she took my bag and drove home, I hopped on the bike and sprinted. She beat me the 5 miles home by about 4 minutes, although I could have won had I not run into one of my cooks (not literally) half way into the ride. Probably lost about 3-4 min right there... So I guess I wasn't drunk, just buzzed...

I dunno, sounds like it will require some indepth study to prove or disprove this theory. Anyone interested in funding my new research project may send beer directly to me.
NOTE: To gather accurate data, a double-blind method should be employed. As such, some interested parties may wish to send Crown Royal as an alternate beverage. :p

I will be happy to study any subjects commuting home from happyhour in minneapolis.

Every once in awhile when I used to deliver we used to drink some beer afterwork behind our building. And very infrequantly we would get to the commons and strip down and ride superfast down Newbury St. Naked speed is what we called it. So with the drinking and the naked thing we could go pretty fast. I no longer drink before I ride nor do I ever get naked on the bike.

Yeah, Superchivo and I both played a game mostly sober and were finishing up a couple post-game pitchers (rehydrating, if you will) when we got recruited to fill in on a team that was a couple players short. Hilarity ensued.
