Southeast - Myrtle Beach, SC

I will be in north Myrtle Beach, SC next week. I know the traffic there is terrible. Are there any decent places to ride or should I leave the bike at home? Also, any good places for the family to ride?

I'll be there this weekend myself but will not be bringing the bike. I have brought the bike down a few times but riding is not very enjoyable. Roads suck, no shoulders, too much sand, too many cars/bad drivers. When I do ride in NMB I usually just go back/forth on Ocean Drive - Cherry Grove to Windy Hill. I also shoot up/back some of the side streets west Hwy 17.

In North Myrtle Beach, you really have no good choices east of US 17. You can go up and down Ocean Boulevard and a few of the Avenues (cross streets). OK for a slow amble but not good for training. Little River Neck Road (off of Sea Mountain Highway) is OK in a pinch. All of these roads can be dangerous any time of year, but particularly so in July, since there are lots of cars, usually containing drivers unfamiliar with the area (and who are often sunburned and/or drunk).

For a family, my honest opinion is, leave the bikes at home and enjoy the beach.

If you want to train, my suggestion is to drive a few miles inland, to (for example) Loris SC or Tabor City NC. Park somewhere and ride on the lonely country roads that radiate from those towns. It'll be flat, and hot, but it's pretty desolate back there if you stay off of US highways and S.C. State Highway 9.

We spend time at Sunset Beach (north of NMB) and I ride a number of loops from there. Its easier to get out onto more rural roads.

I'm in North Myrtle Beach for a week. I always bring the bike. I'm not here to "train". I just enjoy riding. I get out on Ocean Blvd early (around 6-7 AM). Traffic is VERY light at this time. Around 9, the peds come out and they are more of a hazard than the cagers at this hour. As mentioned above, Little River Neck Rd. is not a bad out and back ride (there is a dog that will chase), coupled with an Ocean Blvd loop.

If there are any other BFers in NMB this week who would be interested in at least saying hey on the road, let me know!

I have a house at Sunset. Most of the loops I do include the roads on the other side of 17.

Maybe, but I was really bummed when I ended up seeing hundreds of people riding every day when I was there. If you pick the right places to ride and the right times, I think you would be fine. Obviously I wouldn't suggest riding right through the strip but upper or lower sections of Ocean Blvd was always busy with riders in the early morning.
