Hi there- I need some help from you experienced CX racers.

I'm planning on trying my first cross race at the upcoming NJ State Fair July 31st: https://www.bikereg.com/events/ConfList.asp?EventID=7612

It's not a true CX race - more of a crowd pleaser, so the course is very short and even features a run-up over a car.

In any case - all sources tell me that this would be a good way for a novice to get his feet wet.

I've been riding all year - mostly short/fast rides and long rides on weekends and am in pretty good shape for my age (42) but realize I'm probably a far cry from race shape.

I'm in the process of hiring a coach - but any tips you can tell me would be greatly appreciated in terms of training or general race strategy.

Thanks in advance.

velonews.com has some video explaining how to attack the barriers.....get off bike, jump over barrier, get back on bike. watch that, make a pvc "barrier" and start practicing. sounds like your fit so its going to be a lot of technique. don't slip on the car! and remember to have fun and not take it too seriuosly!

The first order of business is to learn how to dismount and remount well.
