I had a set of Deep V's made with Velocity hubs. I'm loving the wheels. The only thing is the rear hub is way louder than my old one. Sounds like when I was a kid with baseball cards in the spokes. Just wondering if anyone else is riding around on loud hubs. Kinda cool because people hear me coming. Squirrels too. :)

Loud? What is the sound of silence?

Mine seems to be working fine, but it quit making noise sometime since last summer, not sure if that means it's on it's way out, or if it's just running quiet....

I have three sets of wheels.

My old rolfs are pretty quiet.
my ultegra hub wheels are silent.

My powertap is very loud.

depends on the free hub body.

In the old, old days (the freewheel days) someone actually made a fitting for freewheels that allowed you to easily fill the entire mechanism with grease, which would result in a silent running freewheel (albeit a bit sticky at first).

My Neuvations are practically silent when I'm coasting down the road. When I ride with my buddy that has some Mavic Ksyrium Elites I can't stand the ratchet noise (then I just ride faster to make him pedal more :P ). On my new FG bike its silent too but thats another story.

the hope xc hubs on my MTB are nice and loud... but honestly I don't notice it most of the time... and not like a CK hub sound... just lubed it up so its got even better sound right now :)

the mavic ksyrium elite are on the loudish side...

the joytec hubs on my Vuelta Airline 2 wheelset are pretty quite

I think you can still find the Phil Wood freewheel grease fitting. Ask Phil Wood. For cassettes, there was the Morningstar Freehub Buddy.

I've removed the cassette bodies from Shimano hubs, pulled off the rear seal, then lubed them with Phil Tenacious Oil. This is thick enough to quiet the pawls but it won't cause them to gum up in moderately cold weather (it rarely gets below freezing here). My hub is completely silent when coasting- the tires make more noise.

Mine are silent (Ultegra) but I think the sound of a loud hub is cool!:thumb:

I'm borrowing a wheel from the LBS until mines built. It has a Chris King hub. Get some speed and it sounds like it's taking off.

Shimano Deore...nice and silent. Unless you're racing criteriums and really need instant engagement of the pawls, why go with something as noisy as the Chris King?

My shimano hubs are silent my racexlites make a very nice humming sound. I have a friend who rides Fulcrum racing zeros and man I swear thers's a chainsaw inside those hubs.

Just don't coast :)

...what he said... I don't notice the noise of my hubs except when i'm doing a technical decent (MTB) where I'm doing a bit of coasting here and there...

I also don't see much of a need for high engagement pt hubs on a road bike outside of racing... but I do notice it on my 29er out on the trail... and my HOPE hubs don't have THAT many pts... but vs the old style shimano it was night and day
