"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - June 17, 2006 Prospect Park, M35+, Helmet Cam

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yes, 2006. THREE years ago.
Throwback helmet cam - 2006, second tape I ever made, still had a crack from the first tape I ever made (hit cam on stem throwing bike at line at 2006 Nutmeg Games). I finally got around to doing it while it rained yesterday.
Notable things:
1. Broke spoke in front wheel about 30 min into the race. Did another 45-50? minutes with a 15 spoke DV46. 9 laps at PP so just under 30 miles.
2. After sitting at the back for most of the race, wondering if the wheel would collapse, I contested the field sprint.
3. Got pushed twice really hard in the sprint. You can't tell because I don't move but I mention it in the comments.

I think gsteinb is in there but I can't tell. Juan won I think. I'm sure there are other BFers too. I actually talk on this one, a few words at the end.
Report and cam clip in one.
Enjoy,

I hate that I have to wait until I get home to see this. Work filters, ugh.
Thanks cdr.

good one. i enjoy seeing the home turf. looks like a few familiar faces in there, too, including some of the women you got on the camera.
wait, really? 50mph on that downhill?! I don't think I've managed to coax my bike above 42.

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad that people get a kick out of the helmet cams. I have a couple more getting finalized.
I've gotten going there pretty fast, I think my max was low-mid 50s, but I was going nuts trying to go fast and wasn't thinking about finishing. I usually coast to/off the front just by doing a tuck and letting the field's draft accelerate me. I rolled off the front by accident in that race but quickly sat up and let some others wade through the wind.
For those who haven't done the race, women start with the M35 but sprint a lap later.
I wish I could make it down for some of those races but now I live almost 3 hours away so I'd have to leave my house at 2:30 AM or so to make the start with some reasonable time to register (20-30 min).

You can do 20 miles on a Reynolds front with two broken spokes.

May I ask which helmet cams you're using? Great videos and very fun to watch!

I use:
1. Canon ZR100 camcorder. DV, acts as a VCR recording a feed. Bought a super long life battery, good for about 2 hours in real life. I tape in long play format.
2. Helmet camera from chasecam.com. Best site, friendly, you talk to the guy for real, etc etc. I tried to order a cam from a different site and it was terrible.
3. The chasecam requires 8xAA batteries. I now use lightweight Lithium batteries (look for the silver batteries that have "lasts 7x longer than alkalines"). I used to use rechargeables but they are heavy. Batteries for chasecam last allegedly 12 hours, but I've never had them die on me.
4. Some cable contraption from Radio Shack, starts with a 90 degree plug so nothing sticks out of the camcorder.
